Here's Part One of a piece I wrote recently for "First Frame," the magazine of the British Film Editors:
"What Happened to the Classic Film Score?"
I'll come back and post the rest of it in additional parts in the near future.

What Happened to the Classic Film Score?

I do have Kanopy.. It's always a question of finding the time!
dansheehan.memyon.org
Yes, he definitely succeeded in creating good posters -- within the restrictions he was handed.
A shame he couldn't have free reign to realize his own vision.
I haven't seen the film, but I'm guessing that the turning point was some time in the 80s with the rise of the star-driven action film.

Ah, yes. Nothing greater than art by the corporate marketing team.
Magnifique!

Just watched the Drew Struzan documentary on Kanopy.

One of the best to ever do it was also one of the most humble. And I love the awe he inspired in legends like Lucas, Spielberg, and Del Toro.

Made in 2013, but very much a valedictory for both the man and his craft. Timely and touching. #FilmSky

when you tie a tie, try to put in a dimple, like so
a black and white photo of a man in a pinstripe worsted suit, white shirt, and textured necktie. the tie has a nice dimple under the knot. a photo of donald trump upside down. there is also a nice dimple on his red tie

Oof, I had no clue he was that much younger than me. You really wouldn't think that by looking at him.

John Candy: I Like Me (2025) dir. Colin Hanks 🎬
The subject of this documentary is still one of the most beloved actors of all time and if you grew up watching him you felt the loss when he died at just 43 years old. Hanks and crew did a great job creating this touching tribute.

I see it's time once again to boost one of the best fantasy adventure films ever made.
I can't recommend DRAGONSLAYER highly enough.
The underlying theme is that bad people with power will invariably screw over people who don't have power.
Sound familiar?
Anywho, it's a blast and a very fun ride.

Welp, this movie premiered almost 30 years ago.
That's just about the same number of years between it's release and the fictional timeline of the story.
Something else to make me feel old.

This year at Episodic Medium, @mousterpiece.bsky.social is going to keep tabs on two of CBS’ procedurals as they navigate breathing life into a historical form.

His first ElsLock review is up now:
Review: Elsbeth, “Yes, And...” | Season 3, Episode 1 / Matlock, "The Before Times" | Season 2, Episode 1
It's time to talk about two Columbos for the price of one.

One final note in case you get all the way down here: it's worth noting that Rotten Tomatoes is owned by Fandango, which in turn is partly owned by Warner Bros Discovery, or whatever that company is called today, and partly owned by Versant, which is a spinoff of Comcast NBCUniversal. 30 Rock stuff

63 years ago tonight Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? exploded on to Broadway. Uta Hagen played Martha and when she left the show she was replaced by, um, Elaine Stritch. Can you imagine? You don’t have to because 11 years later she recorded the whole damn thing.
AND HERE IT IS.

By sheer coincidence, today also marks the birth anniversary of Melinda Dillon (1939-2023), who originated the role of Honey in the Broadway production.
Dillon earned a Tony nomination for her performance.
