More and more international researchers I talk to are choosing not to visit the US in the current political climate. Over time, I think this will complicate information exchange between US and international researchers, slowing the process of scientific discovery.
Where fools dare to tread
The U.S. Department of Energy has chosen 11 advanced nuclear projects as the first tranche of its Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program.

Australians rushing to put batteries in their homes and businesses after their liberal government gave a 30% subsidy whereas when we had a liberal government in the USA that offered a 30% subsidy towards installing batteries Americans were ho-hum about it. 🔌💡

Australia just installed 16,000 home batteries in 28 days. We need innovation to match - One Step Off The Grid
Cheaper Home Batteries is driving record uptake, but experts warn that without better deals for consumers, much of their grid-wide value could be lost.

Regardless of the fact that Republicans are desperate to stop Americans from taking advantage of cheap energy from PV in order to help protect fossil fuel industry profits, when Trump first took office in January 2016, we got less than 1% from solar yet this January we got over 5% from PV. 🔌💡

The Administration is stopping clean energy projects at a time of rising electricity demand because of AI. The result? Your electricity bills will be higher and there will be more pollution.
WHY ARE THEY MAKING ELECTRICITY MORE EXPENSIVE
In Texas, just an hour ago, the grid hit a 2025 peak demand record at 82,566 megawatts. Solar was providing 30% of the power, and wind was about 16%. The cost of wholesale power in Texas was $22 a MWh. No conservation alert, no shedding or shutdown – just abundant affordable power. Shine on.
Eesh. That's not making me happy like your Cali posts

New graphs showing fossil gas use down 42.5% since 2023 and 24.3% since 2024 on CAISO grid

WWS up 16%, solar up 47.4%, batteries up 213% since 2023

162nd of 207 days in 2025 with >100%, for an avg of 4.7 h/day (v 1 h/d in 2023)

WWS has met 57.5% of demand in '25 v 48.7% in '23

21% less fossil gas used in CA so far in 2025 than in 2024 & 40% less than in 2023

Demand also down 0.6% v 2024 & 0.8% v 2023

So much for claims that
1) We need more fossils to meet increase in demand due to AI
2) Grid can't stay stable unless we use unleash more fossils

over the weekend, france 🇫🇷 opened a criminal probe of x dot com over allegations of foreign interference and intentionally manipulating its algorithms to skew that nation’s democracy

The probe is based on complaints from a lawmaker and an unnamed senior civil servant.

Srsly.
i think the big middle event between george floyd protests and covid that accelerated this hard right turn in elite circles was tech employees using slack to stage walk-outs and force concessions from management. tech bosses got a first whiff of organized labor's power and started reading mein kampf
Only in America could a white man with a current net worth of $2 billion see himself as part of a victimized group. 🤦‍♂️

Hey, remember when car and oil companies successfully lobbied governments to create car dependent cities and suburbs, and once we became almost completely car dependent, WE became the loudest, angriest champions of unhindered road space for cars, unnaturally cheap gas, and subsidized free parking?
The US has had an intent, which was strategically pursued by both parties for all of the century so far with subsidies, R&D support and so on. All the things you are pointing out China did for RE, US did for fracking. Of course we can do long term sustained central planning. We did. Still do.

The trend towards lower oil demand growth, in place for some years now, looks very encouraging.

IEA in today's OMR:

"World oil demand growth is forecast to increase by 700 kb/d in 2025, its lowest rate since 2009, with the exception of the 2020 Covid year."

In 2024 EVs were displacing two million barrels of road fuel per day. That’s almost equal to how much the whole of South Korea uses in a single day.
