Counting down the 1000 greatest rock and roll songs of all time and making other lists of my favorite tunes and albums. Rock and roll is my favorite genre but I truly like a little bit of everything, from classical and cumbia to honky-tonk and highlife.

Isn't Cuomo the guy Republicans got mad about during COVID for the nursing home deaths? Or is all that anger fungible depending on shifting lib-owning priorities?

monoculture doesn't exist anymore in a lot of ways yet people consuming like variations on the same crap as mediated by the same 5 platforms is a different kind of monoculture

By mashing every kind of consumption into a single platform streaming makes it hard to replicate earlier experiences and it means people need to create their own social structures around music (which can incorporate streaming!) - TV has adapted to this a bit better I think

someone has to do an involved analysis of how instant-access, play-whatever-whenever culture may have simultaneously deadened the thrill of finding something obscure while making it socially embarrassing ("fucking hipsters") to romanticize it -- right as populist corporate fandom started dominating

The political media is in a bubble, reinforced by Twitter
We have to wait until Trump is actually a king to protest, at which point protest will be illegal but the protest we would have had would be logically sound to Mike Johnson, who would then move the goalposts anyway to "you are not allowed to protest the king with his divine right to rule."

if AI does turn out to be massively labor replacing, we should should use the surplus to enable high-touch arts, liberal arts, care, and social gatherings.
Prior even to the invention of AI, elite universities marketed themselves on the smallness of their class sizes and low student-to-professor ratios. Close attention has always been a marker of educational quality.
The most important thing universities should do in a world with AI is to greatly increase the number of professors, so that classes can be smaller and more class time can be spent directly interacting with students as people.
My Parliament mix CD from over 20 years is still funkin‘.
The fall is the best time of year for all the contemplative dad rock classics.

I love the fonts, colors, and design of those greatest hits albums from A&M Records in the 1960s. Sure, the music they had inside could be a bit fuddy-duddy sometimes, but it was also all relentlessly pleasant. Herb Alpert’s pop jazz stylings make me feel like I am on game show while on vacation.
This AI slop post of Trump’s feels very “look at what I didn’t actually come close to doing”
Seems weak to post AI slop hinting at things you were absolutely too cowardly to even attempt
It‘s nü-metal Friday. Sometimes I get an intense craving for those downtuned guitars.

Big reason that the US right is still not happy even though they control all the levers of power right now is that they haven't found the deep state government agency that bestows cool people with coolness. Surely it must exist! Where are they hiding it? It drives them nuts.

Something about 2005 albums in 2025 doesn't feel like 1985 albums did in 2005. I know to some extent that's just me getting old, but still...
Trump is not disciplined obviously but he knows his values (such as they are), frames the debate, and rejects unfavorable framing out of hand. Mamdani is one of the few Dems who has applied this to better politics and I wish more Dems would. It doesn’t even require Trump’s demagoguery!
Some of my favorite elevator music and Muzak. Some of this stuff is better than its reputation, some of it actually deserves the scorn it receives but is sort of a hoot anyway.

CD is probably the right format for that one anyway.
I am here for when you get to Wild Mood Swings!
Slowly Type O Negative is getting more critical recognition; there was a Pitchfork Sunday Review of Bloody Kisses a few years back. But October Rust was always my favorite of theirs, a totally unique goth metal record that a lot more music dorks would love if they knew it was in their wheelhouse.
The news doesn't really do a good job of telling you why or how the worst people we know are getting everything they want either. It's mostly PR stenography anyway. You're not missing much.
what is the upside for Dems ever opening the government back up
