We could probably come with 20-30 exceptions. These efforts should focus more on taking the systemic symptoms seriously.

I saw one earlier today that said babies with colic might become rigid and irritable but to try chiropractic first!

Some of the deeper skin lesions of hand foot and mouth also will not blanch. Like you, I think it's incredibly rare that a parent won't bring a child in when they see a funky rash.

A more common non-blanching rash from bleeding in the skin (or inside the mouth) that is associated with a well-appearing child is ITP: immune mediated thrombocytopenia. This is an auto-immune condition that causes loss of platelets. Kids should be seen right away even if acting fine.

The rash they are warning about in this is purpura fulminans. This occurs when sepsis leads to a coagulopathy where platelets and clotting factors are used up rapidly allowing bleeding to occur in the skin (or anywhere else in the body it wants to). Again, these kids are extremely ill.

I see stuff like this on FB and around the internet periodically and it isn’t very helpful. Yes, a rash sometimes seen with sepsis doesn’t blanch, but before that the child will be sick as shit. There is zero chance a parent wouldn’t already be concerned enough to seek help.

Absolutely agree. Corporal punishment of children, either from a caregiver or a school, is wrong. It is ineffective. But most importantly, it is fucking wrong.
