The Bowser in the Sky skybox from Super Mario 64 is well-known for its ominous appearance. However, it is actually made by combining real sky photos from texture libraries and then color-shifting them. Restoring the image from the original files shows it to be rather serene.

Since today is Godzilla's anniversary, I wanna mention that while I've only known him for two movies (Minus One and Shin) I refer to him as my "big man" out of affection ever since I saw Shin in August so happy birthday big man :)

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the cutscenes on Starship Mario are controlled by a giant floating L in a special cutscene dimension.

In the Super Mario Galaxy games, all areas have parallel versions loaded based on the current mission or state of the plot, called "scenarios".
Starship Mario in Super Mario Galaxy 2 has a special scenario for the cutscenes playing after getting a Grand Star, so instead of taking place in the regular version of the area, they can be thought as taking place in a dedicated "cutscene dimension".
Here, a group of objects is loaded that each contains the script for one of the cutscenes. The objects are invisible in-game, but create an L shape when viewed in a model editor. Note that while we do not know how the programmers saw the objects in their own editor while making the game, the coordinates of the objects make an L shape, so it would have been a floating L regardless of how the individual objects looked.
