California's Prop 50 redistricting map upheld in preliminary injunction federal court decision.

Trump Can’t Cap Overhead Rate on NIH Grants to Research Universities, Appeals Court Rules
The ruling is a victory for higher-education associations who challenged the proposed 15-percent cap, calling it illegal and claiming it would devastate the research enterprise.

LaMalfa's district was set to change in the new Prop 50 map for the 2026 elections, but a special election will be held in the old redistricting commission map to replace LaMalfa.

With @mtgreener.bsky.social's resignation, the GOP majority in the House is narrow. This is similar to what happened in the 1950s Senate where deaths led to change in party control. We found unexpected deaths affected policy. theconversation.com/what-happens...
What happens when senators die or are incapacitated?
With several senators testing positive for the coronavirus, and many older than 65, political scientists look at 1954, when senators’ deaths changed control of the chamber.

RIP to Rep. Doug LaMalfa, who unexpectedly passed. Unexpected deaths in a narrowly-divided Congress have an impact on policy outcomes, as @NicholasNapolio and I show in our research on past Congresses with unexpected deaths. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Also interesting was this discussion on CA redistricting that I participated in @usc.edu with Politico's Sasha Issenberg, a Yes on Prop 50 consultant and a No on Prop 50 consultant, and a former Obama counselor. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuq8...

Hi @kjephd.bsky.social - I offered some thoughts on the CA redistricting effort and how it passed on this podcast with @rmichaelalvarez.bsky.social right after the Prop 50 vote. I have lots of other thoughts too, and may write about it in a few years. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EC_...

Not a partridge in a pear tree, but close! California’s state bird - California quail - came for a visit during the Christmas Los Angeles rains!

Rain in Los Angeles finally stopped. Beautiful and almost clear skies! ☔️ Post-Christmas sunshine!

Good morning from snowy Philadelphia! Visiting east coast and awoke to a beautiful light snow.

Is there anything optimistic about the redistricting wars? On this @usc.edu panel, I talked about how redistricting wars are energizing research & student work in my Democracy & Fair Elections Lab while also raising intense public interest. www.youtube.com/watch?t=3264...

Darrell Issa considering a move to Texas to run for Congress instead of running in CA48?!? Prop 50's Democratic gerrymander working in unexpected ways!

Gave a talk at U. of Copenhagen for Thanksgiving. While there, visited Borgen (the Danish Parliament), watched a @fckobenhavndk.bsky.social game, and took a very cold ride up the @tivolicph.bsky.social gardens ferris wheel! #Hygge #Thanksgiving #Denmark

Had a great time presenting new research on policy diffusion & legislative behavior at @ucph.bsky.social & served on a dissertation assessment defense. Bonus for professional trip to University of Copenhagen in the early winter - visiting the Christmas markets!

Very interesting polling results on redistricting. Voters support independent redistricting; and/but want maps that help their parties right now. www.politico.com/news/2025/11/21/poll-redistricting-partisan-gerrymandering-midterms-00663612

Decision states that evidence exists that Texas racially gerrymandered, which is unconstitutional

Texas congressional maps blocked by federal court. The first backfire in the 2026 redistricting wars. Court says stick to 2021 lines, though special master probably would be best move. www.texastribune.org/2025/11/18/texas-redistricting-ruling-lawsuit-el-paso-court-2026-midterms/

New congressional map in Utah. My students this semester drew maps in Utah as part of a lab assignment, as Utah's state law has extensive and clear criteria on fairness. There are 100s of ways to draw a fair map, and the judge picked one. @redistrict.bluesky.bot bsky.app/profile/redi...
