Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Yeah he's really good at it so I hope he stays with it. Him and his brother had a rough couple of years before their parents finally got divorced this year, so I'm glad to see them doing so well.

My 16-year-old nephew went to a college baseball scouting event recently. I just found out he is ranked No. 1 in the country among 16-year-olds for speed and will likely have many scholarship offers to play baseball if he stays with it.
