These are all the people I wish I’d known earlier in my career.
Now I’m just an intimidating source of knowledge because I didn’t have people who practiced empathy in leadership

Story time, years ago I was doing eng stuff for the training dept and boss asked me to look at one trainers laptop and external as he had a bunch of training materials on it. Fixed it and it was ALL porn.
I regret looking, pretty sure he was swinging with his wife.

All he got was a warning.

if you have servers, someone in your org is trying to store their pr0n on them; it's one of the fundamental truths of sysadmin

I got 5,758 feeds indexed but computer says no.

Yes, I'm certain those are indexed. Next step, move the appview from did:plc to did:web and maybe it helps ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The part of the client where your feeds are displayed. Every single one except Followings says "Feed unavailable, Click for information".
chipnick.com
All this work to index missing feeds and I _still_ don't understand why I can't get the client to display them.

ok now have a really bonkers method where I take existing indexed feeds, check for links to it to find the real feed service did then look for feeds associated with it aaaaaand its working
A screenshot of a indexing process that is discovering feeds and indexing them.

Nope, service dids return nothing :(

This ended up being way easier than expected. I started by iterating through all users and ended up looking for links to the main feed generation services.

I only know this as I wrote a really shitty script to pull them so I can use @microcosm.blue slingshot to backfill feeds

Random fun statistic, since my relay/indexer have been running rather consistently for the last 4 days I've indexed 655,830 unique DIDs.

I'm trying something stupid by sharding the relay indexing across separate indexers so I can pick out more easily when things happen like feed generation to help figure out appview magic.

I am honestly a bit impressed at how well visual studio code handles working over ssh. I'm working across two servers with every feature available and all I needed to do was install the necessary binaries.

My hot take is that vibe coders are simply modern day script kiddies.

It’s likely why IDEs were so fast to integrate AI. Won’t be long before half the features are effectively Agentic flows.
chipnick.com
Just had a thought that with increasing reliance on code assistants, developers are going to be spend less time using their IDE features and more on asking the assistant to fix the formatting rather than running reformat or to debug the code rather than attaching one with breaks.

Fortunately in Germany ISPs haven’t had much luck since if they advertise without explicitly defining the fair use structure they can’t enforce it.
chipnick.com
By my isp? “Fortunately” it’s a local one on fiber but I see what you mean.
I don’t plan to run it long term, it’s currently running the whole gamut so I can figure out some index issues, after I’ll pair it down to a small handful which should in theory halve traffic.

I do wonder if running a relay from home ingesting every pds out there will get my ip flagged for something
chipnick.com
Absolutely 100% yes. If ever you need to correct a wrong, bring a nice cheese.

I did scoot it under the massive hvac to the left after this cuz water bad

My next step is to go upstream and try setting it up from scratch to essentially replicate @futur.blue s journey to zeppelin.
chipnick.com
If the indexing starts to lag it’s not stale posts showing but entire feeds fail to load as freshness is a major factor in how it fetches. And a slow plc is even worse since appview cant validate a user exists and returns confusing 401s.

Verdict on zeppelin:
A lot of work has been done to provide an all in one setup for operating an app view with client, working through the setup taught me a tremendous amount about what an app view is and the invisible dependencies. In particular just how much everything depends on indexes.
