Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 11th lowest on record (JAXA data)

• about 110,000 km² above the 2010s mean
• about 1,070,000 km² below the 2000s mean
• about 2,190,000 km² below the 1990s mean
• about 2,850,000 km² below the 1980s mean

More: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...
Line graph time series of 2025's daily Arctic sea ice extent compared to decadal averages from the 1980s to the 2010s. The decadal averages are shown with different colored lines with purple for the 1980s, blue for the 1990s, green for the 2000s, and white for the 2010s. Thin white lines are also shown for each year from 2000 to 2024. 2025 is shown with a thick gold line. There is a long-term decreasing trend in ice extent for every day of the year shown on this graph between August and November by looking at the decadal average line positions.

In some uncharacteristically non-Arctic news: I recently had the pleasure of discussing my research on how late-night shows respond to tragic events (doi.org/10.1177/0304...) on Austrian TV as part of the ORF ZIB Magazin episode on why satire matters in times of crisis 📺 on.orf.at/video/142933...

My latest for American Scientist Magazine helps give scientists the tools to fight back against politicized charges that our research is silly or pointless- tools that will work whether you’re asked “why are we funding this” from your asshole uncle at Thanksgiving or an asshole US Senator.

“Why Are We Funding This?”
Long-standing myths about “silly science” have contributed to the reckless slashing of government-supported research.

I think I might have just received the best academic gift: *Publish or Perish* - the game 🃏 it’s made (@maxhuibai.bsky.social) & tested by researchers #peer-reviewed & very fun to play with non-academic friends too („you can tell that you do this for a living“) 😅🌟 (not an ad, just a (peer) review) 👩‍🏫

Science diplomacy: At our Summer Academy, @idos-research.bsky.social ’s Charlotte Gehrke hosted a workshop exploring the 1973 Polar Bear Agreement through scenario-based negotiation, inviting participants to engage as state, non-state & more-than-human actors. A highlight in inclusive governance.

How, where and by whom is #ArcticGovernance being negotiated? @hansenmagnusson.bsky.social and @charlygehrke.bsky.social take a closer look in a new article in @iajournal.bsky.social: www.idos-research.de/en/others-pu...
The image is a publication announcement from IDOS. The title of the publication is "Arctic as a boundary object: who negotiates Arctic governance?" by Hannes Hansen-Magnusson from Cardiff University and Charlotte Gehrke from the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). It is published in International Affairs. The background is grey with a red section at the top left containing an icon of an open book.
