That there are still doctors and pastors who support and offer this form of torture to unsupportive religious parents breaks my heart. That so many years later our LGBTQ+ children are unheard, misunderstood, and threatened by our government makes me furious.

I was heavily medicated, attended individual & group sessions, and was given electro-shock treatments. It didn't "cure" me of being gay, but it did leave a lasting effect. I have had memory issues, anxiety, and social phobia my whole life which drove me to self-medication with alcohol.

I was also hospitalized in a psychiatric ward after a nearly successful suicide attempt. I could no longer bear the bullying I was getting in high school from students and teachers alike, especially in gym class. My Catholic parents consulted a Catholic psychiatrist who extolled conversion therapy.

I just read about June Lockhart passing on Thursday, and about her defending gay people on The Virginia Graham Show in 1970. I at first couldn't understand why I didn't remember that, but after doing the math it became upsettingly clear. I was 16 at that time.
