Donald Trump has been firing people who protect your health, safety and pocketbook, and who keep our country safe.

The shutdown is just his latest excuse for these purges.

Three senior Republican appropriators agree it doesn't make any sense for Democrats to agree to a government funding deal unless Trump actually adheres to the deal.

The Democratic alternative CR has language that would begin to address this, but Trump and Vought are completely opposed.
"If you're a Democrat - even just like a mainstream Democrat - your predisposition might be to help negotiate with Republicans on a funding mechanism," said Rep. Steve Womack, a senior GOP appropriator. "Why would you do that if you know that whatever you negotiate is going to be subject to the knife pulled out by Russ Vought?" "I don't think the Democrats want to shut down either," Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho), a senior appropriator, told Bloomberg Government. "Their concern right now, and it's a legitimate concern, is that, how can we agree to any deal when our OMB director will just impound the funds and say we're not going to spend them there?" Julie Tsirkin @news_jul •1h
MURKOWSKI blames Russ Vought for making it harder to negotiate shutdown end:
"The appropriations process is being run over, and that, to me, is absolutely unacceptable."
She understands why Democrats don't trust them given Vought's rescissions and layoffs.
"Why would you?"

Tomorrow is a critical day for democracy in court. Compare how the Washington Post framed it vs Democracy Docket.

Right now, fearless, pro-democracy media is more important than legacy media platitudes. Sign up now to say informed. hubs.ly/Q03M8rql0

ICE is planning to hire contractors to run an around-the-clock social media surveillance program to track our every move.

If you think this will just be used for deportations - think again.

This is a violation of every single American’s privacy.

For context, Democracy Docket first launched a paid membership 18 months ago and already has more than 50,000 paid members (and nearly 500,000 free subscribers).

Yes, the 100k number is only WaPo's print subscribers, but it is still a shocking decline given the interest in democracy and elections.

We have a free press for a reason.

This kind of Orwellian censorship is a blatant violation of the First Amendment.

Pete Hegseth does not get to decide what is reported to the public.

You would think a former news host would know that?

The White House budget office said it is preparing to "ride out" the shutdown.

Instead of negotiating a budget that protects peoples' health care, the White House will continue to fire federal employees and wait.

They don't want to end this, they just want to posture while Americans pay the price.

It's day 13 of the shutdown. What's Trump doing?

Negotiating a budget deal? No.

Preventing premiums from doubling? No.

Stopping 15 million Americans from losing health care? No.

He's meeting the Pres. of Argentina to reward him with a $20 billion bailout.

America first?

I'm very much looking forward to my visit to ASU next week! Note that there is a livestreaming option if any non-Arizonans else want to join in—see the RSVP info.

I'll be drawing on ideas/themes from my book but from a different lens: stewardship (which is not something I talk about in the book).

Join us for Humanities Week!
The Lincoln Center and ASU Farm welcome
author and professor Roberta L. Millstein, who will
discuss her book, “The Land Is Our Community.”
Inspired by Aldo Leopold's land ethic, Roberta L.
Millstein reexamines this philosophy in light of
contemporary ecology.
Her book provides new interpretations
of interdependence, land health, and the
“biotic community,” offering a fresh take
on how these ideas can guide modern
conservation and restoration policy.
