snippet from next chapter of jayvik fic ‘integrated circuits’:

It’s dark when Jayce wakes again, disoriented, only the sound of his heart monitor breaking the quiet stillness of the room. Why has he woken up? He’s usually a solid sleeper—once he’s asleep he stays asleep unless he has a nightmare or something wakes him.

He blinks as his eyes adjust to the darkness, then swears loudly when he makes out a dark figure in the chair next to him, one eye glowing sickly orange.

“Calm down, Councilor Talis,” the infamous industrialist and chembaron, Silco, says, voice low and level. “Wouldn’t want your heart rate to bring the night nurse in, would we?”

Jayce stares at him, eyes wide, tongue darting out to wet his dry lips. He watches as Silco takes a cup, fills it with water, and brings it over to Jayce. Jayce takes it, confused.

“What—” He swallows, then takes a long sip of water. “Why are you here?”

“It’s not to kill you, if you were wondering,” Silco says, amusement curling his words. Jayce’s fingers twitch around his cup and he takes another drink.
