🌷 @cargodin.bsky.social’s Preview!

It's game day for me! This is a snippet of the page I drew for the "Flower Dancing in the Wind" zine, coming out soon[ish]!

For more previews and preorder info, check out @/aerith_zine on Twitter @/aerith-zine on Tumblr

ALT: A preview image of an illustrated page featured in the "Flower Dancing in the Wind - An Aerith Zine vol II."

In the preview, a young Aerith stands on the hill overlooking her house in Midgar. She is wearing her yellow-ochre school uniform, boots, frilly socks, and light pink bow. She is facing her house with her vack to the reader. Aerith is holding a bundle of yellow flowers like the ones surrounding her in the grass. She looks off screen to an unidentified presence as sun beams shine down on her.
More people than ever want to see articles like that one European hitpiece on Rule of Rose, and there are, sadly, people who are more than happy to reshape their gut interpretation of a game into something that fits that mold to look like an inside guy on some level.
At least in the anime world, someone goinf "Man, it sucks that Watsuki is replatformed by Jump. Thank god I only read good stuff like One Piece." will very quickly get you fact checked. I just think games get way less care cuz no one has time to engage with the games they hit the press about.
I'm not linking and citing it because I'm not after that writer at all, but the reception of it. City of the Wolves shouldve been fucking done in the social zeitgeist back when SNK got acquired in the first place. SNK fans were just mad about the cringy celebs getting added and needed another bus
Thinking on the reception of that one City of the Wolves piece that people called A+ groundwork just because it called out the political involvement in the background--when we all knew this months ago so why were people even looking at an SNK game to begin with and acting like we got duped AFTER?
I think that's where most of my game reading now comes from independant developers or private end consumers on their personal blogs. Playing a video game as homework and then writing an objective review as homework is fine. I just think less people actually do that cuz duh they don't get clicks.
Between needing connections before, playing the Red Tape and Embargos game and likely needing to learn other languages just to curate certain genres *at all*, recent stuff like that garbage SNES book just seem like an inevitable end result--cuz he's not the first lazy af writer to get platformed so.
I have friends who write for video games so this is absolutely not a stab at Games Journalism Per Se, but one of the main reasons I find reading game articles "tricky" for me is that a lot of authors publish subjective thinkpieces as objective and it just... gets accepted as objective press

77. American McGee's Alice

Who knows the logistics of the EA news yet, but I've always associated the American McGee series with them. Plus, I wanted to revisit Madness Returns.
It's rare to see a gem do exactly what it seemingly sets out to do, and the VO rocks. I'd love to create stuff like this.

76. Perfect Blue

I dig the upscale! This was a fun rewatch for what they couldnt and couldn't preserve on the big screen.
Still, even though it's a stepping stone for Satoshi Kon, it's easily my least favorite of his movies. The composition is all there, but the plot execution is laughably shallow.

Shirobako still - the main cast members sit together around a computer.
75b.

The characters themselves would probably be more ripe for critique, but they act the way they need to to move the story along, so it doesn't dock points for me.
I love the storyboarding here too, especially as characters' faces are obscured as much as they are during heavy dialogue segments.
75. A Silent Voice (movie)

Watched this while recovering. Used to only see comparisons between the JP and the dub, so this was my first time seeing the dub in full--it's been praised I think anywhere I've read about it, but Lexi M Cowden's performance really is lovely and fits each scene she's in!
No Face being content with his little cake is suoer small and in the backdrop in the third act, but I think it's a great parallel to Chihiro crying over a rice ball. A little token of welcomeness directed at him makes him way happier than gorging himself on a feast he was judged for even coming near
The other bathhouse staff are interesting because they all want to be treated as VIP guests while also joking about how repulsive their actual guests are, so it's an interesting spot for Chihiro to be in if her resentment for her parents wanting better got her into her predicament in the first place
I used to think Spirited Away was just about hard work, maybe that's also true to most Miyazaki works--more characters hit their resting point in the plot doing some manual labor, but Chihiro and Haku are the sole employees at the coffee shop NOT making youtube skits about how all the customers suck
If Spirited Away is about the inevitability of looking down on other people--even those we care about (like how Yubaba mistreats both her precious "son" and her disposable Haku), No Face too is fun to think about cuz he gives and gives to the point that he's vapor and is still viewed as a parasite
