I get it, and we’ve certainly heard rumors about counter protesters in my area. Worst we’ve had so far is people going🖕🏻and yelling swears as they drive by. “Just exercising my 1st amendment rights, have a nice day” is my only response if anyone is rude to me directly

The last time I was at a rainy protest I realized smarter people than me had figured out how to encase their signs in clear trash bags or even laminate them … and they remembered their ponchos whereas I uh did not 🤣

Another helpful hint: preferable to just have a poster board you can hold and then roll or fold up. You don’t need (and often they prefer you don’t have) a piece of wood or something hard as a sign handle

As a general comment - you do not need to find a big protest or protest in a city. Having 100-400 people come out in a smallish town also raises awareness, and may even have more impact. If the idea of crowds freaks you out, peruse the web sites of local Dems orgs - may be a small protest nearby
