Soldering advice pls

Getting a new iron.
The last I had was cheap basic Draper (30w I think)

2 problems: the tips kept disintegrating; the solder never got really hot and needed longer contact time to solder.

Someone said cold/low power iron could cause this. True?
Should I get a higher wattage?
