No, dang it, my partner has a meeting in a very rural part of the state. ☹️
Lots of food for thought in the comments. This is what I come to Bluesky for: creative and impactful exchanges.
Farmers grow what they grow because of farm policy.

We don’t need all the soy and corn that we grow, but those are the commodities that receive subsidies and markets.

If we want something better, if we want to heal the Earth and grow food, now is the time to do it.
Fulgoraecia exigua is the Planthopper Parasite Moth, a diminutive creature, the caterpillar of which lives as an external parasite of planthoppers, sucking the host’s hemolymph. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA, October 14, 2025. #bugsky #moth #moths #insects
Very small, dark gray moth with elliptical wings and comb-like antennae, sitting on window screen, head up.

Born on this day in 1894, E.E. Cummings (1894–1962) was a poet and artist who redefined modern verse with playful language and structure. His works honor individuality, love, and creativity. “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” #EECummings #OTD
Initially read this as “supernatural tax,” and thought “Yeah, that tracks.” 😝
I know what you mean, but this is still insensitive, if not offensive. Thank you for reconsidering.
One of my favorite insects in its trademark Halloween colors: an assassin bug, Pselliopus barberi. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA, October 10, 2025. #bugsky #insects #insect
Oval, orange colored insect with black and white banded antennae, black and orange banded legs, and black hash marks around the edges of the abdomen. Perched on the toothed edge of a leaf, with part of a chain link fence in the background.
Can you please explain these three? Are they UK specific? I don’t recognize them from here in the U.S. Thank you.
It was the movie “Shoot the Moon” that I remember best. It broke me because of my own parents’ divorce, and realizing that the conflict never ends. I finally understood that the divorce *did* affect me, and I basically had PTSD.
Thank you, same sentiments to you.

Isn’t that a very rare event? Sorry, I hate that bats are singled out every time. Skunks, raccoons are much more of a rabies threat as I understand it, but nobody talks about that.
Just followed you for this alone. 😄
How do you have only 53 followers. I like what you are doing!
Just got home from #heartlandbookfest, where I actually sold 24 books (4 titles). Probably going to fall asleep now.

Look what arrived in the mail today! Hooray and congrats to Ken Feder! "Insightful, respectful, important, and a pleasure to read. It belongs on the bookshelf of every American," according to one archaeologist who blurbed the book. Get your copy today!
Wow. I would have thought that Europe was far more progressive than that.
Understood, and I agree with that cautionary approach. My next book is going to center around problems in urban natural history, so this whole conference sounds intriguing.
I would be very interested in seeing this. Any chance it was recorded and made available on YouTube or something?
This got me to check out your account. All of your works are wonderful.
