The fact that Jefferson clearly recognized the evil that was chattel slavery makes his personal conduct even WORSE, not better. He knew that what he was doing was a crime against humanity and he kept doing it anyway.

The man raped at least one enslaved child and sold his own illegitimate children into bondage. That's not just "asshole" behavior, it's incomprehensibly evil.

Maybe they have just enough self-awareness to realize that Trump won't be President forever, and if they sign an agreement that turns them into a propaganda arm of the Executive branch then they will eventually be carrying water for some Democratic administration instead of the current guy.

Honestly that’s probably giving Bezos too much credit. Just because he wanted to controls the media narrative doesn’t mean he wanted the paper gone entirely, just as Musk didn’t really want Twitter gone entirely.

I don't think Trump actually believes in heaven and hell because that would imply a belief in a being greater than himself. But for someone egomaniacal and narcissistic as Trump, the prospect of fading into oblivion after death is probably at least as terrifying as the prospect of eternal torment.
