"[A] democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is Fascism—ownership of Government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power." - FDR (1938)

Had a major plumbing problem fixed today. Do I love paying so much for house maintenance? No. But I’ll tell ya, it feels pretty good to be able to do it. 🚽 🏡 👍🏽

legal academia is a weird mix of some of the best and most immediately actionable policy research about the impact of specific laws and procedures, and then there’s originalism

I take your point, and agree in principle. But consider. A society like the one described above would, over time, become infinitely more affluent than one like ours based upon assumptions of exploitative hierarchy in a zero-sum game. If the ceiling were removed, and the pie made bigger, then maybe?

In a free and fair society cleansed of abuse and exploitation, that enjoys equality of opportunity and outcomes (a fantasy perhaps), one could imagine the theoretical possibility.

I’ve recently seen takes on here that boil down to: "there are ethical ways to become a billionaire in America." And perhaps that could be true theoretically. However, it is patently false given the current configuration of the American political economy, which incentivizes abuse and exploitation.

I’m looking forward to the No Kings rally on Oct 18! Reminds me of the Women’s March in 2017. Took my kids to that one, they were just little boogers. Now they can make their own signs and march alongside us!

They are terrified of the No Kings rallies and doing everything they can to discredit them.

If you're on the fence about going, just think of how much it'll piss off these assholes.

Emmer: "We call it the 'Hate America' rally because you'll see the hate for America all over this thing when they show up. The rumor is that they can't end this shutdown because this small but very violent and vocal group is the only one that's happy about this."

Americans love drugs.
Americans also love drug tests.
While those things may help explain one another, they are also in tension.

The USA drug tests its citizens more than any other country and ties Americans' rights, to keep one’s baby, to do one’s job, or to vote or move freely, to the results of drug testing. Learn the history behind America's chemical citizenship on the #HagleyHistoryHangout!

I had a fascinating chat for the podcast with prof Laura Browder about the history of drug testing in America. Check it out!
