Eh? The republican turn towards right wing insanity was an active process which happened during my lifetime and yours.

Degrees of difference matter, and a “conservative” is meaningfully different than a “fascist”. We want more conservatives and fewer fascists!

I don’t disagree! But Pelosi is arguing from a very institutionalist perspective here.

Also like- there isn’t a Disenfranchise Every Racist button, we have to live with these people and in a free country they *will* vote. Conservative institutions are useful tools in limiting right-wing radicalism!

The Republican Party =\= the American conservative movement

Strong parties, Pelosi thinks, can moderate their radical wings- something the Democratic Party is arguably *too* good at.

The republican party doesn’t even try to do this anymore, because it lacks the power to discipline its members.

Thinking about what a good “baseline” for level 1 should be in a RPG. Luke Skywalker at the start of Ep. IV is where I’m landing. He can’t do fancy Jedi stuff, let alone fight Vader, he’s a rube who needs exposition, but he can do “Star Wars“ things like shoot, fly a space ship, fix a robot, etc.

I keep going back to this, but one of the reasons South Korea has an incredibly effective protest culture is because they have *decades* of organizational experience through daily/weekly protesting. it helps a lot to do the routine stuff to be able to pull off the big stuff.
