New post just out:

The relationship between Russia and the European radical right goes well beyond Reform's Nathan Gill being bribed.

In this post I trace the history back to the 1990s and look at the threat it poses now.

I made this for my students. They like it. I think it’s making them more aware of language. I like that.

So when I hear of students being encouraged to use GPT in college I don’t hear innovation. I hear cognitive atrophy, the inability to think critically for oneself, and total dependence on vulnerable centralized repositories of data for knowledge without ever understanding how knowledge is generated.

Fuck off.

If you teach at one of these ‘schools’ get the hell out.

Heads up NZ primary school educators: the refreshed, refreshed maths and English curriculums you’ve invested so much time getting your heads around this year are being rewritten overseas.

You’ll be expected to teach to them next year.

I know Erica Stanford and her office, Elizabeth Rata, and Michael Johnston have had this sent to them by an irate educator.

The accusations I make are heavy: someone erased Māori and Pacifica authors from the curriculum at the last minute.

I have had no push back.

Make of that what you will.
Recapturing the Senior English Curriculum
2024 had been a good year for Stanford. The speed bump that was the outcry over the senior English curriculum and the lack of consultation had been smoothly managed by her, and she was on a roll wi…

NZ can't do earthquake building standards but we can drill for oil & gas

NZ can't do EV subsidies, but can tax mileage at same rate as big utes

Nz can't honour our treaty; can be one of the few that refuse to recognise Palestine.

And if you knew what the ‘usual’ process of refining public policy looks like, you’d be more horrified.

Rimmer’s taken the whole ‘reflect, refine, revise’ section out of the cycle. Now it’s just

Minister says thing -> becomes policy

Hence upswing in submitting against bad legislation.

David Seymour is quicker to defend Elizabeth Rata from accusations of racism than he is to defend Samuel Leason, Youssef Sammour and Rana Hamida.

Watching our lamb grow and seeing how interactive she is has made me curious to learn about sheep cognition.

So I’ve been diving into the research and — holy sheep! She’s a highly complex, intelligent being with emotions and desires who recognises these in others.

I knew she rocked.

Tell me Stanford is acting in a way you expect a Minister to act. Go on. Tell me.

Tell me Stanford, with no education experience, is acting in a way that leads to the creation of good education policy. Go on. Tell me.
