Gettleman done. Van Brunt starting her own statement.

"The defendants do not actually deny that attorney access is a problem," Van Brunt says.

She adds, "there are no unmonitored lines anywhere in the facility," saying this endangers attorney-client confidentiality.

Gettleman going over what he says "really isn't addressed" in defendants (govt's) submissions to the court, including the allegation that human waste is present on the floor of Broadview's holding areas, possibly due to clogged toilets.

He also addresses the allegations of Broadview detainees getting insufficient food and water, of unhygenic conditions, people being coerced into signing documents they don't understand, overlong stays, insufficient sleeping areas, etc.

Now in Judge Gettleman's courtroom in Chicago, waiting for the morning hearing on this case - which alleges the Broadview, IL ICE facility is a "black hole" where detainees are deprived of legal counsel and subject to inhumane treatment - to begin.

Update: District Judge Robert Gettleman told the govt to return the immigration detainee plaintiffs in this lawsuit to IL by 4pm yesterday, as they had already been moved out of state.

I finally got word the plaintiffs were back in IL at ~7:45 am. A hearing in the case is set for 9:30 am today.

Border Patrol agent Lairmore testifies that he was not injured by the sandwich, but he felt the impact through his ballistic vest.

The sandwich came apart and "kind of exploded" on his chest upon impact, he says.

"I could smell the onions and mustard."
