Then suddenly someone is beating a horse to death and it's the most harrowing thing you've ever read. Then back to someone being complexly irritated with their downstairs neighbour. Yes

I recently read a dostoevsky novel for the first time and was so grateful for the slightly, well, boring passages - why should every page be another smooth transition to a compelling point of crisis? Novelists aren't emotional concierges. I felt lucky to be subject to his tests.

it’s good when novels are huge and long and even occasionally boring, it’s fundamentally a durational form

I don’t understand why we need a “Columbus Day” when this country celebrates incompetent white men failing up and taking what isn’t theirs all year round.

All there is here - black tiles, a faint smell of rubber, and this solemn list of prohibitions for the protection of the absent cats.

I know this because as one of the baristas brought me my hot chocolate they shouted, 'puke!'

Today on a whimsical impulse i went to a cat cafe.

There were no other customers. I tried to go to the loo. Behind the only door: two sleeping cats and their barista-carers, who angrily told me to leave.

I returned to the empty main room and sat. Then one of the cats vomited.
