I hope to see her/them someday. She did a solo show in Durham (I’m in NC) as part of that tour but I wasn’t able to attend.
Following Maya Bon’s (of Babehoven) recs has led me down some pretty wonderful paths as well. Especially Sour Widows.
I love exploring these universes whether it’s the ones that form around boygenius, MJ/Wednesday or Megafaun. I don’t know how long I’d been listening to the last Hurray For the Riff Raff album until I noticed Brad produced it, who played on it & where it was recorded.
I’ll definitely check it out. A good deal I’m familiar with & some I’m not. MJ Lenderman led me to Florry. As a big DBTs fan it was not lost on me that both Wednesday & Florry cover Cooley songs. I also love not just those connections but the ones to Brad Cook & Waxahatchee as well.
For no particular reason I’d gotten away from listening to KEXP. This excellent piece by Gina Arnold got me back on track.

I read the lyrics but it was months later before I listened. That was 2023. It came out on Fancy Gap’s debut album last year. You likely know Stu from the Love Language.

When I was at my lowest Julien Baker’s music helped me pull through. There was an ample amount of Phoebe Bridgers & boygenius as well. During that same stretch a friend sent me this song he’d recorded with Sharon Van Etten (unreleased at the time) but things were too pitch black for me to listen.
Apple at the moment but I jump around. Love Bandcamp as well. I still buy & listen to vinyl but go to a vinyl night because I have no set up at home. I also stream radio, mostly KEXP.
I’m going by memory but I feel like that’s pretty close to what she said. I’m a huge Julien Baker fan & her music helped me through an incredibly difficult time but I probably wallowed in my own misery a bit too much. I’m hoping to achieve more of a balance these days. Florry lifts me up.
Yes, but I’ve kind of taken a step back after hearing Francie from the band Florry talking about a show where the artist said they were gonna play a sad song & be sad together. She said it gave her the ick & went on to say how she prefers to be jubilant & just have fun in her own music making.
The longer I go without listening to Classic Rock radio the more likely I am to actually enjoy listening to the stuff I burned out on from hearing it so often.
Things are better now but I’m still struggling. This music helped prolong my life. Not to mention the love & support of family & friends.
This album & the follow-up, Turn Out the Lights helped me survive the deep emotional trauma I experienced in 2023. Car wreck, loss of job, bankruptcy, & the very real possibility of homelessness.
Please help out if you are at all able to. If you are unable to please share Michele’s post far & wide. Below is the original article that led me to her work. It struck a chord with me because it’s pretty much exactly how I feel about vinyl. A few years ago, she updated it. I’ve also linked to that.
hi, an important IHTOV update. thank you for reading it.
