Most people would say the stock market crash of 1929. That was probably the No. 1 factor, but the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 made it worse. The act raised tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods by almost 60%. /1

The march demonstrated the strong antifascist sentiment within the Ybor City community. The event is commemorated with a historical marker and a mural in Ybor City’s 7th Avenue, featuring prominent activists such as Margot Falcone, Dolores Ibari and Luisa Moreno. /end

The women, primarily working-class Latinas, marched from Ybor City to Tampa City Hall to present a petition to Mayor R.E.L. Chancey advocating for their community and the broader antifascist cause. The demonstration was styled as a funeral procession to highlight the impact of fascist violence. /3

The march was a protest against the rise of fascism in Spain, particularly the bombing of cities such as Guernica, and its global implications. The women also viewed local issues such as nativist violence, anti-labor vigilantism, and ethnic and gender disparities as forms of fascism. /2
