I was going to take the train to Brighton but in the end it was easier and cheaper to drive. It meant I had the unbridled joy of the repeat Jilly Cooper episode of @backlisted.bsky.social

The anticipation is palpable … what book will be joining my @backlisted.bsky.social Hallowe’en shrine this year?
A collection of the Backlisted books featured on previous Hallowe’en episodes:
Cold Hand in Mine by Robert Aickman
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Ghost Stories by Edith Wharton
The Breaking Point by Daphne du Maurier
Beowulf
Something in Disguise by Elizabeth Jane Howard
The Altar of the Dead by Henry James
Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M. R. James
Round the Fire Stories by Arthur Conan Doyle

All the books are arranged on a dark green background and are surrounded by Hallowe’en decorations including a black cat, some tombstones, candles, spiders and cobwebs, pumpkins and coffins.

I prefer to look after objects I buy; and I find the 'smear it with jam, it's your book' argument both consumerist and contemptuous of the object, in so far as if I went around saying 'smear your coat with jam, it's your coat', people would probably think I was nuts. But it's all bollocks.

Neither breaking the spine of a book you are reading, nor trying to ensure the spine does not break while you read it, nor using an e-reader, indicates a more 'authentic' approach to reading or signals the correct attitude to the object. 'Fetishise' or 'vandalise', two sides of a pointless debate.

DM Brendan if you can use his spare ticket for our upcoming podcast at 92NY on Monday 27th October.
brendanbe.bsky.social
Yo, I have an extra ticket (my partner can't get out of work early enough to go), and I can't figure out how to cancel it on the 92NY website.

So ... DM for deets if you’re in the NY area and want to go, I guess?

I mean, it would be ridiculous if Elston Gunn or Blind Boy Grunt turned up as a last-minute guest wouldn’t it. But he’s done more ridiculous and unexpected things, so who knows?

Readers of my first book Tilting at Windmills may be interested to learn that the inner sleeve of @warringtonruncorn.com’s new LP depicts the ‘betong’ category of miniature golf course, as utilised in international minigolf tournaments to this day. Hats off to that dead town planner!

The @backlisted.bsky.social family will know Rob best from his astonishingly clever ‘choose your own adventure’ short story collection WE ALL HEAR STORIES IN THE DARK, discussed on the Beowulf episode! Fans of the Halloween show will really enjoy CHIMES OF MIDNIGHT for its riff on ghost stories! 👻

This is enraging, it is not relaxing viewing. But it is wonderful.

Also interesting on something we’ve seen here in UK: one campaigning obsession (eg Covid masks) because against libraries. We’ve all seen people obsessed with one issue go absolutely doolally on ALL the issues.

Picked up this collection of Graham Greene’s film criticism from the late 1930s in Oxfam this morning. Haven’t seen one for a while. (His views on Shirley Temple aside, most of the reviews are unfamiliar to me. I will add anything eyebrow-raising to this post.) @backlisted.bsky.social

“Where do you get your ideas from, Ms Le Guin?” From forgetting Dostoyevsky and reading road signs backwards, naturally. Where else?
