Lifting his lantern, Gebill made his way closer to the berths where, in the morning, if any ship's captain didn’t want to have a stern letter written to the harbourmaster, ships would begin the laborious business of moving things from the ships onto the dock and from the dock onto the ships. It was a circular life, but it did make people money, he supposed. Of course, the lantern made no difference at all to the fog. It swallowed the light, giving the shifting vapours the strangest of shapes in the surface, but he liked the light. It almost made him feel safe in a city where feeling safe was somewhat of a luxury.

The #clash of some kind of equipment brought Dylan running into the storage area, where two rival pilots had decided to air their differences, violently.

No guns, which Dylan was thankful for, but it only served to prove the loose alliance needed to let off some steam.

It was a good thing that the game made players’ characters insubstantial to each other or, in the tumult of the mêlée, things could #clash & get a little complicated.

As it was, Rory found it difficult to see what each player did and he would often find himself attacking the same monsters.

“I hope Signis doesn’t play the lone wolf if we need backup from a fleet patrol.” Negal scowled and went from alien-next-door to captivatingly intense in an instant. Laughter felt irritation for the jab of attraction she felt.

“Too proud for his own good?”

The Imdiko eyed her as if weighing his next words. In the end, he pasted on his winning smile. “Bad blood between him and his former compatriots. He won’t put a grudge ahead of the Coydidak’s security…and therefore, yours. We’ll keep you safe.”

Signis had been a member of the Kalquorian Empire’s fleet? The Nobek who was against everything non-Coydidak?

She was about to ask, then remembered she didn’t give a hoot about Signis. Or Rorix. Or Negal, for that matter. Quashing her curiosity, she gave her unwanted dinner companion a bland expression. “So nice to know we can count on the weapons commander to do his job. I’ve updated you. You can go now.”

Doug has suffered a sudden brain trauma of some sort. I cannot get him to respond. His medical AI has contacted emergency services, but they have not arrived yet. Can you help him?”

“I’ll do my best. May Everly and I sit with you while we wait?”

“Please do.” He made an odd motion with his hands, still clinging to the sub, which his fingers bit deep into. Hayly realized he was trying to indicate the chair across the table from himself.

“Thank you.” She sat and smiled in what she hoped was a comforting fashion. “Did the trauma occur while Mr. Pritchard was eating?”
