In April, The Athletic decided it no longer wanted to cover Penn State football. I was out of work ahead of the most anticipated PSU season in two-plus decades.

Penn State owes James Franklin $8 million per year (through 2031). If he takes a job elsewhere, that figure lessens.

Doing this now also lets Franklin figure out if he wants to coach somewhere next season.

Penn State center/team captain Nick Dawkins met with reporters this AM: "For us as players, it's an overwhelming sense of guilt like we got our coach fired because we didn't play well enough. We didn't do our job good enough and now he doesn't have a job anymore."

Pat Kraft went to the Lasch Building on Sunday to tell James Franklin he was no longer the head football coach at Penn State.

"This is not three-game thing," Kraft said Monday. "I’m not shy to admit it, I’m here to win a national championship."

James Franklin did address Penn State's players yesterday, Terry Smith said: "As you can imagine, it was emotional. ... We're gonna miss him."

How does Penn State get out from under James Franklin's buyout? It's an annual payout as opposed to a lump sum. That's really important to note. Makes it about $8mil/year which is much more manageable than the total that's close to $50 million.

Rushing offense: 52nd; Passing: 96th

With the starting QB done for the season, a team in disarray & a head coach who might've coached his last game at Penn State, nobody saw this coming.

It was a sad and surreal scene in Beaver Stadium.
