Inspiring talk by Francis Collins.

Paraphrasing Jane Goodall - Hope needs and requires hard work - we can make a difference.

Following a Special Recognition by @geneticssociety.bsky.social to Francis Collins for his contributions to human genetics and genomics. This is Dr. Collins's 48th #ASHG meeting. It is critical to continue interrogating variation in diverse populations! #ASHG25 #ASHG2025

After Trump got his Covid shot, he chose to fire the scientists protecting the rest of us from diseases.

I recommend reading this really powerful letter from MIT!

MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Evidence-based vaccination recommendations are about more than individual decisions

A child infected with measles as a baby “not old enough to be vaccinated at the time of infection” recently died of a complication 💔

Vaccines protect kids who receive them — & infants & others in their communities
L.A. child dies from complication of measles infection contracted in infancy
The child died from subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a fatal progressive brain disorder that strikes roughly 1 in 10,000 people infected with measles.

Today, scientists know that genetics plays a role in many conditions and diseases. But back in the ’90s, geneticist Mary-Claire King was the first to link a gene to an inherited form of a common cancer.
A Trailblazing Geneticist Reflects On Her Life And Work
Dr. Mary-Claire King was the first to link a gene to hereditary cancer risk with the identification of BRCA1. She was just getting started.

Just received our NHGRI NOA for year 3 of our Pathways in Genomic Data Science training program! 3 months late but I’ll take it! 🎉🎉. Thanks so much to the tireless work from the NIH community!

Vaccines don't cause autism. What does? Mostly genes.
The number of people diagnosed with autism as screening has improved and the definition of autism has been expanded.

A terrorist targeted federal workers last week. There wasn’t much reporting on it. But I’m not finished thinking about it! 🧵

An anti-vaxxer fired more than 500 gunshots into CDC Atlanta, shattering 150 “blast-proof” windows on 6 buildings. Employees were pinned down in terror.

The average American simply has no idea how quickly the infrastructure that keeps us safe and healthy is collapsing. These systems run in the background thanks to government employees who quietly do critical work. Those employees are being purged and systems are being destroyed.

The Trump administration, seemingly determined to hobble the NIH, continues to devise new and insidious ways to politicize what has long been considered the crown jewel of US research.
My latest for @opinion.bloomberg.com (🎁 link):
Politicizing Scientific Research Comes With a Hefty Price
More oversight at the National Institutes of Health is slowing down innovation that could meaningfully improve people’s lives.

When people ask me what gives me hope, my answer is simple: you do. Every person who refuses to look away. Every lawyer who files a brief. Every protester who shows up. Every voter who refuses to surrender their rights. You give me hope—not because victory is certain but precisely because it is not.

Lisa Cook, Federal Reserve Governor, is a Black woman with exemplary credentials, education and history of accomplishments. Trump has baselessly accused her of mortgage fraud.

Translation for 🧪 folks:

Due to recent court order, OMB has finally released data on its withholding of $ to agencies like NIH, NSF, etc.

Including the "footnote" about stopping NIH from spending billions (WSJ story from last month).
