Crucial Comix is one year old today! We're celebrating our birthday by starting a Patreon, so we can be financially sustainable for the long haul. ✊ Check it out and thanks for supporting independent artists: www.patreon.com/c/CrucialComix
Since we launched a year ago, we've run 33 workshops and classes, published 64 comics, paid cartoonists $6473, and paid artists $18000 to teach comics classes. Nice work! What's next? We're starting a Patreon to cover the cost of running the site, to pay our editors, and to have a larger budget for publishing more nonfiction comics. We're in this for the long haul! In prioritizing payments to artists, we haven't been paying our editors (Audra and Shay) for running the publication. We want Crucial to be sustainable and not flame out like so many independent media outlets. Comics are rooted in collaboration, in sharing your weird, wild voice without censorship or control. The funding comes from our community—that's you.

My comic about the deportation of the Kalmyks 81 years ago today is up on Crucial Comix! Please have a read and learn about the ethnic purges that Russia is happy to sweep under the rug. Read it in full here:

Page 1 of a 10 page history comic called Operation Ulusy. The colour scheme and style of the illustrations take inspiration from Central Asian textile art, particularly Kalmyk embroidery.
Panel 1 shows a Kalmyk mother and two children looking worried at two partially seen people in military uniform. It is snowing and the family is bundled up and carrying their belongings. Around them, and throughout the comic, embroidery motifs from Central Asia convey their rallying spirit in this trying time. The caption reads: “On the 28th of December 1943, the deportation of the Kalmyks began.” Panel 2 reads “Driven into cattle cars, 93,000 people (virtually the whole ethnic Kalmyk population) were exiled.” The mother watches as uniformed men point the way to cattle cars in the snow.

A comic about finding happiness.
Page 1 of 4. A package is delivered to a house. It has the logo "CR" on it, and is opened by disembodied hands to reveal a VR headset and a flyer reading "consensus reality" Page 2. A person puts on the headset in their cozy living room. A panel from their perspective: they see a popup reading "Welcome to consensus. Do you accept the terms and services and sign away your likeness rights." They select the word "Absolutely." Their hand flips through realities, selecting "consensus." The world around them becomes simplified, rudimentary lamp and chair and table replace their specific furniture. Attempting to lean on the table, they fall over as the VR representation of the table doesn't correspond with its actual shape and size. Page 3. The person, fallen on the floor, swipes back up the realities menu. They select total ad block. Now they're surrounded by a pure black void. They yawn. Page 4. The person rises to their feet in the empty void. They turn off "total ad block" and select a new reality: "100% natural." Looking out window blinds that are now alarmingly lumpy and organic looking, their headset reflects a world made of gooey, formless meat. They grin.
