Sawyer's not an uninteresting character. His development is decent overall, but I don't think he works as well as a central character. Maybe he could have, but it got a little crowded with all of Jack's other relationships swirling around.

Sawyer's weird because he had to become a major player due to the love triangle. But it gets awkward because Jack's the lead and his relationships with Locke, Kate, and Desmond are far richer thematically and crucial to the overall story.
