And if you are pregnant or a child, avoiding protein supplements as a precaution makes sense. That protein (which is very important) can be gotten through diet.

While I have issues with these sorts of sensationalist "no safe lead" studies, a reasonable takeaway from this is that you don't need to consume a lot of protein supplements and should focus on eating a balanced diet.
