Next time an institution tells you how seriously it takes research misconduct, ask them if it's *this* seriously. www.bmj.com/content/297/...
In 1916 the BMJ published an article about the work done by James Shearer, an American physician working in the British Army as a sergeant (because he had no British qualification). He had described a
"delineator" which was better than x rays for portraying gunshot wounds. This caused a sensation and a lot of interest — but on investigation the work was found to have been invented. The BMJ published a retraction, but Shearer was tried by court martial and sentenced to death by firing squad.

Far too optimistic take on this. Be realistic - being a Nobel-level scientist is the best chance of having three whole weeks away from work email, and this sets a precedent that even then, someone will not heed your tripnote.

Just signed up to peer review an application for one of the largest science funders in the world.

Asked to confirm I was at least 13 years old. Might explain a lot about the grant review process if it's secretly dominated by teenagers.

Sad views from southern #Svalbard 30.8.25 - melt has reached high up the mountains. From Hornsund to Amundsenisen barely any snow left… how should glaciers build mass like this? Svalbard is heating fast. Only steep mountain walls seem to help accumulate a bit and catch blown snow 📸from✈️

Met Office stats confirm summer 2025 is officially the warmest summer on record for the UK.

The UK’s mean temp of 16.10°C surpasses the previous record of  15.76°C and pushes the summer of 1976 out of the top 5 warmest summers.

Did you ever find out? If it's SG I am tempted to say the Sorling hut, given the coastal position, elephant seals and mountains, but the shape of the roof is different in this photo I took in 2015.

Not bad, but not as gripping as S4C

Ah, but you do so much more and get to work with amazing gadgetry that pings data back from inside ice sheets and stuff.

I’m just here with a turkey baster…

When you see a paper in a top journal

that claims to be doing a global map of richness of a taxonomic group

yet there are huge lacunae in the global map of samples

from which they have done some fancy interpolation

you have to be just a little bit sceptical
