In Benin City, archaeologists are excavating the palace compound of obas or kings in Edo, capital of Benin Kingdom, one of West Africa’s most powerful kingdoms from 13th-19th Century. A 16th Century ivory pendant mask depicts Idia, mother of Oba Esigie (r. 1504–1550).

At the site of Houten-Castellum in the Netherlands 🇳🇱, archaeologists uncovered a hollowed out animal bone filled with the black henbane seeds at a farmhouse dated to between 70-100 AD. The find is first conclusive evidence that Romans used the toxic seeds, likely as a painkiller.

The skull is believed to be from a lion that lived between 1280-1385, making it the oldest Barbary lion skull found in the UK. It is thought to be one of two skulls discovered by workmen in 1937.
