I had in mind that you meant direction of travel rather than starting point.

Belgium. For all the nationalist point-scoring and occasional confederal moves, BDW is a classic liberal politician in policy terms. GLB less instinctively liberal but certainly economically "dry".

The budget cuts announced by the different governments for 2026, and the capping of unemployment benefit claims at 2 years.

Oh we’re fine. Windows closed watching things unfold. Might delay the walk to work a little…

Yeah, two conferences to run in central Brussels today … going to be fun.

Not a good start to the day of the national demonstration, at least on the Place de l’Yser. Casseurs out early destroying the tram works and burning stuff.
Roads blocked and tram works set on fire

Sorry to hear it. Hope all goes well (as much as it can)

Frankly I've been phoning it in since @dzyrl.bsky.social married me

Absolutely I could proudly go to seed.

Yeah, you didn't see mine then

2003. The child on my chest is now 1m90 and a standup comedian, but I still have the same sweater.
The OP with a child of about nine months on his chest, on a red sofa in a small village in North Devon.

But Torrington - Barnstaple - Ilfracombe would be welcome...

Barnstaple - Taunton is the real loss, and irreparable with the Link Road. I love the Tarka Line but particularly with the junction to the GW main line facing away from Paddington it's never really going to be a solution to bring the longer-distance travellers.

One of my favourite Dutch phrases is vestzak-broekzakoperatie (a jacket-pocket-trouser-pocket-operation) meaning to shuffle money around in ways that make no real difference.

Yes, I am in a project budget negotiation, why do you ask?

I appreciate that Belgian butchers don't beat around the bush (as it were) when announcing the start of the game season.
A shotgun, empty cartridge and a dead duck. The text reads: Hi Anthony, the autumn is in its full glory and while natures clothes itself in warm colours and the evenings get colder, there's nothing better than coming together in a different way: through good companionship and the taste of the wild game season. The smell of fire, the rich aromas of the meat, the feel of coming home - for me, that's the real start of the game season.

Very interesting, and confirms both the importance of the centre right rejecting the far right (as seen in Flanders in 2024, too).

The Spanish centre-right is taking a tumble and the far-right is on the rise.

I was lucky enough to present some new causal work on Friday at LSE showing that the PP does better when it signals distinctiveness from VOX.

~1.5K tests, same result. Rejecting far-right benefits centre-right

This is such a good article btw - I really buy this as a theory of contemporary US politics

It will be interesting to see how resilient the UK's broadly European social attitudes are when subjected to the far-right billionaire fire-hose. My guess: quite resilient.
