Oh hey! I got a really cool opportunity to do some cover art for the Criterion Collection release of Captain Blood!

No one's ever really gone - join me as we go through how redemption has ALWAYS been part of Star Wars, how Ben Solo follows the most famous redemption arc ever written, and why his death is the worst possible outcome

A Christmas Kylo: What Even Are Redemption Arcs?

Like jedi Finn was already ruined by tfa?? When that was a misdirect from Rey, who is our new Jedi. While Finn was just unconscious for the end of it

Can't believe I've been explaining to people just Literal facts of what happens in this movie for 10 goddamn years 😭
I think the problem is that people are conflating two things

Like yes, we should advocate for people of color to be cast in bigger roles in general

But no that doesn't mean that fans are willfully promoting the status quo by preferring existing characters who are well-developed
Me, watching TFA: oh I, too, am a perfectionist crushed under the expectations of my family, feeling alienated and manipulate by my boss, whose life significantly improved after finding the right person. Here's hoping that works for this guy too
It's JJ's fucking mystery box in TFA - it let people project whatever they wanted to and then become too entrenched to care about new information.

Honestly I think a lot of people never moved on from the trailer
I mean, if the shoe fits... I usually use SW takes to evaluate video essayists, and I've always felt a misunderstanding of such an obvious setup for redemption is a pretty low bar to clear. Like, most casuals get that from one viewing of TFA - it's the people with confirmation bias that struggle

It’s literally been ten years, I’m sorry but I just do not remotely care what anyone still salty about Kylo/Ben has to say at this point.
I think she's one of those left leaning people who decided that tfa set Kylo Ren up as a 1-to-1 analog with real life young men becoming alt right nazis, and so thinks all his fans are from that crowd (despite substantial evidence that they despise him)
Rolling your eyes and saying of course people want to see the white guy is 1) stupid - like omg, I can't believe people want to see more of the SKYWALKER in the ster wers
And 2) Essentializing Finn down to his race and browbeating for not being woke enough to prefer him is uh kinda racist
And second, lbr, Finn's character was never utilized properly. The thing to do with him was a stormtrooper rebellion in tros and they didn't

If no one's clamoring for more of his story it's because DLF fumbled his character's potential
💯 this

I'm so sick of the "woke" accusations of 'how you could you like THAT character when another from a more marginalized group exists??'

Like, first of all, it's called the hunt FOR Ben - someone else has to be the main characters hunting him, aka Finn and Rey ideally
This is such a weird framing when A LOT of the same people who think The Hunt For Ben Solo sounds cool have been in trenches BEGGING for Finn's return for years now.

Wild how fans that like Ben Solo also like other ST characters cause we want more projects with those characters. Shocking, I know.
So, people really want a “somehow Kylo Ren returned” movie before a Finn movie. JFC….
Kylo Ren's story is over, that's like the point. Ben Solo's shouldn't be

Especially when his sacrifice is stupid and nonsensical. It's not like he did anything to stop Palpatine or whatever
Yeah, it's definitely a skill that takes some practice but it's so important when doing any kind of analysis
I say this as a video essayist - you need to develop your own perspective

Both bc experiencing art is kinda the point but also so you know when those videos are full of shit
please watch movies and read books and play games and look at art, please view it with your own eyes through a lens you made yourself and not just through video essayists and ending explained videos please im begging you
Except Shakespeare, with Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing, where both sides of the conflict are pretty equally explored

But the fact that they were popular plays may account for the difference
I think that theory works because most classic proto-ETL books are written by women - P&P, Jane eyre, Wuthering heights, the Scarlet Pimpernel

Those written by men may have similar ideas, like the count of Monte Cristo, but don't really explore the situation in an equal way
You can't criticize people into taking positive action; complaining about what they're making only ensures that they won't make anything, not that they'll make what you want
Absolutely shocking news that an album I thought no one on the planet but me bought in 2005 took 20 years to chart

Good for Imogen but I must assume it's some tiktok trend
Yeah, because her whole story of tfa IS about wanting her son back

Of course I'd like it to be more about leading the Resistance, and her lack of presence during the trench run is weird and bad, but her story is about her son, sorry to haters who think they'd be better children to her
One time I was saying that Leia's story is pretty dependent on her son, actually, and someone told me smugly that THEY tried not to focus on men all the time
A new medium for a new Catwoman - but how will being in a kids' show affect her plots? Her schemes? Her relationship with Batman??

Let's dig our claws into it and discuss the infatuated feline
