Ophelia is my beloved Siren in Twice Drowned, her species being more monstrous in appearance than the classic idea of a mermaid (hence me using Siren, as that mythology almost rings truer in describing them). They're callous, cruel, territorial and true predators of the deepest, darkest sea.
Tell me about your merfolk and otherwise fishy characters! 🧜‍♀️ #WritingPrompt
Still working at Twice Drowned, here's a little snippet for #Saturdark Fun fact: So far the word 'blood' features 22 times in this wip. 🩸
Her lips, half-coated as they were in dried blood, were full and pressed tight like she was concentrating. They were also the same shade of pink as her nails. The colour suited her. Though not half as much as red did. That oughta bother him more. The blood splatter that spotted her lips and chin. But then, he had seen worse. Back at the casino, he'd only caught a glimpse of her in her true glory - teeth fastened tight - and he'd felt a sort of kin-ship looking at her then. Despite everything. No, the blood had never bothered him; he'd been born in it, bathed in it, felt it warm against his cheek . . . but that had been a lifetime ago. No. It didn't bother him, but it should.
Love horror but I've only sort of dipped my toes in, especially with Twice Drowned, but it's something I want to incorporate more. But, I do have a gothic horror wip that I'm working on, though I'm trying to both embrace the genre whilst also doing something which I hope is innovative(?) with it!
Tell me about the horror you’ve written! Or if you haven’t yet, something you’d like to tackle. #WritingPrompt

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in this writing events! Monster Manor has done a couple different style writing prompts over the years, but I think this was by far the most fun and most successful. It would not have been possible without all of you!
In Twice Drowned, it's important to both chars for different reasons. For Ophelia, it's myth but also an ending, there's finality to it. Whilst for Logan it's affirming and yet unwelcome in some ways. For both of them it's like drowning.
Ooh I'm a sucker for writing romance, there's something so fun about it. I don't always intend to include it but it always gets in there! I love playing with its concepts, motifs and varieties. Like it's such a part of me despite never having had a romance myself, and idk it just gives me joy 💕
Since I’m still annoyed about yesterday, tell me about the romance in your book/wip and what it means to you! #WritingPrompt

Introducing #wolfetober

I personally plan to use this to practice micro / flash fiction and warm up sketches, I invite anyone who would like to to join me.

💜💙 RULES
- there really aren’t any! Skip, mix and match, and have fun!
THE PROMPTS
1-2 moist and slimy
3-4 off the leash
5-6 infestation
7-8 rotted meats
9-10 restrained restricted
11-12 soaked through
13-14 unfulfilled wishes
15-16 sharp gills sharper teeth
17-18 caged hound

27-28 transparent wings
29-30 provoked bite
31 unlucky vending machin
So they're at 1950s D*sneyland, Ophelia is making fun of everything but secretly enjoying it whilst Logan is talking her ear off with trivia and celebrity spotting. He's also handing her different treats every five minutes. There's also a lively debate about the Mermaids 🧜🏼‍♀️
Your characters are at the amusement park of your choice. Who's here for the food, who's riding the most hardcore rides, who's shopping for trinkets, and who's just trying to not die in the sun? #WritingPrompt

Ban payment processors stopping services based on objections to legal content
Government should legislate that payment processing companies may not place stipulations on use of their services regarding sales of otherwise legal content and, if they do so, must face legal penalties and must remunerate platforms and individuals for lost income until service is restored.

Currently pushing 15k with my wip and nowhere nearer the halfway point 😓 Veryyy tempted to rework the concept into a short story format but I'm also horribly attached to the behemoth it's become. . .

The moment when Ophelia reveals her monstrous true appearance in a moment of crisis and the aftermath where Logan learns the truth. Its going to be pivotal!

NIGHT TIDE X 3:10 TO YUMA X THE LAST UNICORN

Twice Drowned; A trans cowboy, Logan, unwittingly rescues a killer mermaid on-the-run, binding them together on a journey where their pasts come back to haunt them.
#PosterPit #W #HF #R #H #F #A
Movie-style poster with a cropped close-up of a painted blonde woman with flowers in her hair (Ophelia by Antoine-Auguste-Ernest Hebert) with a close-up of a painted man with short, dark hair gazing in to the distance (Deportista (Ramon Novarro) by Angel Zarraga). In the background is a darkened close-up of cactuses (Emeralds (Cactus) by Leon Carroll). At the top of the poster italic text reads: "'You think I'm pretty?' She murmured as she traced his lips, her touch so firm he could feel it against his teeth. Grotesque. The word came to him unbidden."
Underneath, flanked by leaf-like symbols it reads: Western meets Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Horror Romance.
In the bottom-center there is title text: Twice Drowned. Above it reads: A Novel by Bex Edwards.
Below the title there is a small paragraph: In the 1950s American West, a tired trans cowboy crosses the path of a killer mermaid on the run. He's been drowned before and she's cursed to always crave what she can't have . . .
So I'm 11k in (which I'm honestly so pleased about since I've only ever written that much for dissertation) but I'm no where near halfway yet so 😬 it's not gonna be a novella lol, maybeee 30k depending on how much of a plot thicket I get into? Either way I'm having fun!! #HotWetQueerSummer #wip

Twice Drowned; A tired, old, trans cowboy gets caught in the path of a killer mermaid whom he mistakes as a damsel-in-distress. Together they end up on the run (from his past as much as her present) across the arizona desert of the 1950s. The past haunts them along the way
A moodboard of images: An old wooden church in a rural landscape, a blonde woman dipping her head underwater, an aged effect photograph of flowers, a blonde water nymph cropped from 'The Fisherman and the Nymph' by Henri Lehmann, a set of sharp pointy teeth on a black background, an abstract watercolour of a dark man in a cowboy hat cropped from 'Cowboy te paard' by Isaac Israels, a blonde woman sat beside a body of water, a close-up of a cactus.
She gripped his shoulders to steady herself, another giddy laugh on her lips.

Technically not their first interaction, but definitely the first time they exchanged words. #HotWetQueerSummer #wip
As she sped out on to the highway, she heard a groan beside her followed by a low voice. ‘Logan’. He winced then. ‘In case you were wonderin’. She hadn’t been, but his courtesy moved something in her leading her to answer him, ‘You can call me Ophelia’. The name was one of many – she could hardly remember her true one, not that it had an equivalent in any human language – but it was the one she’d used only this evening. The name of a woman drowned. She’d always liked that part of the play best.
Another little snippet of my WIP, Twice Drowned, that also serves as an incredibly late #hotwetpitstop ! I'm 6k words in and still nowhere near halfway so yikes~ I'm hoping that I'll make the end of August deadline but if I don't, I've still had a fantastic time!! #HotWetQueerSummer #WIPSnips
He heard her snigger beside him before she spoke, ‘He prefers to watch the pool in the daytime, the motel rooms can rot so long as they do it quietly’. Again, that unsettling feeling shifted in his gut before it was masked by sharp, shooting pains as they stopped abruptly at a mint green-coloured door. He leant against the doorframe as she bent down again to search for her key. This time he didn’t have the energy to avert his eyes, not that he could see much in the lowlight anyway. He wondered idly how long it’d be until the sun came up, his sense of time even more off track with the fight. Lucky that he wasn’t wanted at the ranch for a couple more weeks. Shame he hadn’t seemed to gain any self-control in the last fifteen years. The click of the door as it opened disturbed him from his thoughts as Ophelia’s arm came around his waist to guide him inside. Suddenly embarrassed by the attention as much as the helplessness, he fought against the steady flow of pain to gently push off her assistance.
My Italian renaissance Borgia adjacent wip! I need to do a lot more reading on the setting and culture before I can accurately portray the adventures of my papal servant, Piero. Like the bones are there but I don't feel comfortable until I've done thorough research.
What’s something you’d like to write but know you need to do a ton of research beforehand first? What do you need to know first? #WritingPrompt
It's got to be Lord Huron's 'Time's Blur'. A gorgeous instrumental composite of Long Lost that yearns and haunts like I hope Twice Drowned will 💙

youtu.be/vlT1Ee52EAY?...
Oooh well Twice Drowned is inspired by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood's Summer Wine but Sweet Dreams by Angel Olsen really brings the vibes!

Who doesn't yearn for trad publishing? But honestly I'd love to be able to live off this, to earn enough so I never have to 'work' again?? The dream 😭
What’s something you’d love to achieve in your writing career? #WritingPrompt
