Going by train is the most eco-friengly option and therefore should be the most attractive one. However, it is hardly the case.
Considering attending one scientific conference and looking for possible connections:
train - 15+h, 5 changes
bus - 30+h, 2 changes
flight - 4h, 1 change
Prices are even more interesting - train costs 2x in comparison to flight and the latter one from A to C via B is cheaper than direct B to C.
For example, if the person has short-term contracts/scholarships (e.g. when PhD is split into a series of periods by 1/2 year or so) or experiences toxic environment, etc. it could be damaging to mental health. And it is not possible to address by providing medication, courses, etc.
(5)
The key issue - medical treatment of these conditions usually deals with consequences and does not address the causes. Without addressing causes there is no cure but only an attempt to make the patient feel a bit better without changing the situation they're in.
(4)
In addition, attempting to get medical help related to psychical/psychological problems in some countries (incl. so-called 1st world ones) may have negative impact & jeopardize the entire career. Usually people need to sign a consent form that they are aware of possible consequences.

IMO, the hardest situation is when PhD students are unable to solve their problems no matter how hard they try due to systemic problems, prejudice and other factors. The mechanisms for adderssing problems/providing support could be present but just disfunctional.

A new study involving 20000 PhD students from Sweden clearly shows systemic problems with PhD programs/preparation. It would be nice to have similar studies in different countries to identify more general tendencies.

I'd like to share my prospective below:

Although Springer-Nature declared that they are "fully neutral regarding presented maps", in reality such a stance is not neutrality at all.
This map from recent paper in NatComm is just another example of how russia uses science in its war. It shows that russians sequenced plant samples from annexed Crimea & temporary occupied territories in Ukraine. The question is how it passed peer-review & got published without problems.
Watched this and it reminded me that some years ago when I applied for a few positions in science in the US, employers always said that one must have a driver license "because it's not safe to walk in the US" & "there's mostly no good public transport either".

Another day - another paper with only vague description of methods. Everyone is talking about reproducibility crisis but at the same time scientific papers without code for analysis, supplement, etc. continue to be published.
This should be a very nice event on phylogenomics and genome evolution.

Is this the new version / current level of US official communication? If so, I do not know even how it was possible to reach it.
My fellow Americans
what are we even doing here bruh
CDC cuts imposed by current US administration undermines security & would have global negative consequences. CDC is very important because it is only the matter of time when the new pathogen/disease emerge. Without such a center much more people will suffer and die. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/11/u...
