I cannot emphasize enough that the New York City subway is not scary. It’s one of my favorite parts of living here. I grew up in the suburbs having to drive on highways everywhere and that’s way scarier
Thanks to @jeremydlarson.bsky.social for the assignment and thanks to my mom for eventually allowing me out of the house again :)
Always wanted to write a Sunday Review, but never had time when I actually worked at Pitchfork. A year later, I finally did. This is an LP close to my heart— my teen angst in sonic form. In 1995, I snuck out to a Babes show on a school night and got grounded. Worth it. pitchfork.com/reviews/albu...

The song is written for her son, a trans man, for the new trans rights benefit compilation TRANSA from Red Hot. (Full disclosure: my husband Elia is a producer on the album.) Incredible stuff here. transa.world

This new Sade video is unreal. Music video of the year, hands down. It’s all home movie footage of Sade raising her son, literally from birth. (There is video of her in the maternity ward!) I can’t believe it exists. youtu.be/IFMmnMjFiPk?...

Lost to the sands of time, alas!
To be fair: my singing voice is, in fact, terrible.
After belting throughout a showing of Les Mis in 2012, I found myself in a bathroom stall overhearing 2 women complain about the person next to them ruining the movie with her terrible voice. I come out and discover it’s the people who had been sitting next to me. Not sure who was more embarrassed.
At screenings of "Wicked," some fans have defied theater etiquette by singing along with their favorite characters, much to the chagrin and annoyance of other viewers.

Many have taken to social media to issue a strict edict: Shush.
Singing ‘Wicked’ Fans Are Anything but Popular
Some fans who have attended early screenings of the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical have treated it as a singalong. Not everyone is thrilled.

I love how much you loved Tori ❤️
Also: my stepdad subconsciously inspired my entire music criticism career by declaring Tori Amos “a boring Laura Nyro ripoff” after my mom forced him to chaperone me to the Under the Pink tour in 1994. (No, I did not know who Laura Nyro was then.)
“Does this guy have diarrhea?” — my mom, upon walking into my room while I was listening to Beat Happening, sometime in the mid-1990s
Using this as a start: what are your favorite examples of unconscious/unforced dad-or-mom shade about your musical tastes? Just something said immediately or off the cuff. Spill all your secrets!
I want to say, when I was a kid, shortly after we got cable, we were watching MTV (obviously back when they actually played music videos) and something by Aerosmith was playing.

My father, walking through the room said, "Is that Mick Jagger? No, wait, not ugly enough. Can't be him."
Maybe! I think of “golden retriever” as more “wife guy” though, which these folks aren’t really. (At least until Noah Kahan gets married and starts writing all his songs about how much he loves his wife.)
Pitchfork getting nominated for a General Excellence ASME this year is the dictionary definition of “bittersweet”…
