#proofofcat now after 24 hours of absence (my fault - the batteries in her fancy catflap were dead and she was locked out)
I remember the first Ms I met - a new teacher at my school, in the mid-90s. The school gossip while we tried to figure her out was that Ms meant she was divorced. I don't think that assumption would be made now, in the UK. I use Ms and use it for others too, but I'd prefer not to use titles at all.
Not sure why we have both Patient Access and the NHS app in England (the latter is generally more useful but Patient Access for booking private COVID jabs was a tip I received last week)
Top tip - if you log in to the Patient Access app and book an appointment for a private COVID vaccine, it brings up a map of locations offering them, mostly independents. The cheapest near me was £95 but yesterday I was in London and found one for £40.
The previous level was B1 and I'm not sure what the rationale was for raising it
The reporting of this is a bit silly - they mean B2 level, which is IMO fairly do-able. Mention of A-level is not helpful.
Yes, my grandma always answered with "Airton 478"
I remember that one as well!
I remember it (am younger than that!) but memory is not recalling what exactly it was. I know it was on TV...
Yes, I thought Ellen might forgive a suggestion that wasn't academic, as this treatment of footnotes could work in other contexts
The new Terry Pratchett audiobooks on Audible are a good example of how to do footnotes well - a little bell to signal "the following is a footnote" then a different narrator reading the footnote text
Stivichall/Styvechale and Cheylesmore in Coventry
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.
I hope your long covid continues to improve and that you're getting support for it - I know that can be patchy
My husband's very long illness meant that I wasn't doing a great job of keeping up with developments, prospecting etc anyway. And now it's even more difficult for me to go to conferences & events, which was always what kept me sane in a solitary profession. So a local job might be better for now.
Likewise - family circumstances (my husband died) mean I'm reconsidering everything just now, including work.
Three new followers in the previous month, then 20 in the past 24 hours... I'm not sure where you've all come from but hello 👋👋
Still sore about the Hopper exhibition at Tate Modern, many years ago - it was mostly sold out but they happily sold me a full-price ticket timed for 1 hour before closing on the last day. The exhibition included a 50-minute video.
Waiting for a delivery this morning. Delivery driver is called Igor. Terry Pratchett has a lot to answer for (but I will exercise self-control and not address him in the way my brain is tempted to)
That's my favourite descriptor on the Beaufort scale, just a shame it has such nasty real-world implications.
If you are tempted to roll your eyes at this, press Play instead...
We are thrilled to announce that our NEW Large Language Model will be released on 11.18.25.
The main connotation of that word for me (and possibly only me) is the version of Just One of Those Things by the I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again team. "A trip to the MOON, on gossamer wings..."
Once the resident 12-year-old is through the meat-and-two-veg phase that's the kind of meal I'd like to eat a lot!
Looking for recommendations for a hotel in central Berlin, near public transport (we're going by train). Doesn't have to be super-cheap, but super-fancy would be wasted on me and the 12-year-old. We like good breakfasts.
Hello! Your wonderful skill with birthdays has made it through the Tw*tter exodus intact I see - thank you! Difficult times at present mean my birthday was low-key this year, but there was cake, and fish & chips.
