I was quoted about New Zealand's rowing back of ambition on methane in Bloomberg this week:

To explain why New Zealand’s new methane target puts the Global Methane Pledge (and ultimately climate targets) at risk. 🧵

So Luxon seems to think that he's doing farmers a solid by weakening action on methane. I guess Federated Farmers and Beef + Lamb are banking on Government bailouts when the consequences come home to roost? www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
Climate change effects expected to hurt farm viability in next decade, study finds
A new report found irrigated dairy farms are particularly at risk because water supplies are expected to become less reliable in some areas.

So we don't care about climate change. Farmers can sit back and continue to pollute while being paid well for their milk and meat.

"Farmers, despite making near-record profits off high international dairy prices while hiking the price of butter on Kiwi supermarket shelves, are apparently existentially threatened by the prospect of a methane price of 0.5c per litre of milk" @marcdaalder.bsky.social newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/13/f...
Farmers off the hook on climate means rest of us pick up the slack
Comment: The Government's methane announcement is the policy equivalent of a steaming cowpat on cross-partisan climate consensus.

All #UNFCCC parties should:
👉 REJECT “no additional warming” targets that undermine methane reductions and let big meat and dairy producers off the hook.
amandalarsson.bsky.social
High-income countries must:
👉 Justly transition away from large-scale industrial agriculture
👉 Anchor agricultural climate ambition in #Agroecology

The letter stresses: Achieving climate, biodiversity & pollution goals - while upholding human rights - requires fundamental transformation of food systems.

Agriculture systems are at risk from rising temperatures. Ahead of #COP30, close to 100 organizations have issued an open letter to governments. 🧵

Even the dairy industry questions this logic.

"How much of that flows into rural communities remains to be seen, because I imagine plenty of the more attractive payouts are going to be applied to farm debt consolidation." - Brendhan Greaney, Tatua Dairy

The world is watching on methane. Now is not the time for NZ to weaken action on our biggest polluter.

NZ PM Christopher Luxon says "Very, very shortly, we'll have more to say about methane targets."

Given what he's said in defense of the Paris Agreement today, let's hope he isn't planning to weaken NZ's methane target. Or all eyes will be on NZ. www.ft.com/content/2ea6...

Luxon is right to call Seymour out – farmers and agribusiness know that ditching Paris is a disastrous idea.

But Luxon needs to do more than just call out a cynical extremist.

The same arguments he’s made in defence of Paris apply to the #methane target.
