“No Tango or freak dances were allowed…”

In 1914, 230 guests enjoyed a “very pleasant evening” at Bishopsgate - despite a strict ban on Tango, as found in @thebritishnewspaperarchive.

Today? Queer Salsa, K-pop, Ballroom & more. Get your freak on. https://bit.ly/3Ihr9xs

‘Which fonts do you want for the sale poster?’

‘Yes’

All the fonts, including a surprisingly modern 1960s style italic font, advertising the sale of Ashton Farm by auction at the Crown Hotel Bishops Waltham in 1908.

That sounds like useful research to conduct.

🚨 😾 VICTORIAN EMERGENCY CAT TRICYCLE 😾 🚨

Pop a card in the London post in 1896, & a chauffeur driven tricycle would collect your pet for care & cure, providing a smooth springed ride to the Hampstead infirmary

More Cycling World Illustrated gems digitised at mrc-describe.epexio.com/records/CTC/...
Part of a page from 'The Cycling World Illustrated', 26 August 1896. It includes photos of a tricycle for collecting cats (complete with uniformed driver) and the Cats' Infirmary, Hampstead (a pen of cats of varying sizes in someone's house, one of the cats is being cuddled by what appears to be the tricycle driver). The accompanying text reads: "A philanthropic lady in the North of London has established an infirmary for cats. On receipt of a postcard she will send for the ailing animal, the tricycle which collects them being provided with a box resting on springs to avoid all jarring and jolting. The cats are carefully tended at the infirmary, where their quarters and most comfortable, and when cured are returned to their owners, no charge being made."

Plus dinner tonight will be courtesy of the Marks & Spencer 'Reduced' label, so a worthwhile trip all round 😄

The library gods have smiled on me again - located an obscure 1920s journal, and all the issues I needed were present, intact, and neatly bound into one volume.

I have seen it many, many times and it still makes me laugh every time. So there 😄.

Don't think I've ever seen one of my favourite funny animal videos on this site, so I have tracked down a copy and brought it here for your enjoyment. Never fails to make me laugh like a drain (which probably says more about me than it should).

Today's the 959th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, so obviously I'm reposting my scenes from the Bayeux Tapestry in Playmobil.

Red Squirrels always looking like they're about to politely interrupt
A Red Squirrel stands upright on the forest floor, tiny paws clasped neatly together as if waiting nervously to ask a question. Its wide eyes and hesitant posture give it an endearing, almost apologetic expression, as though feeling rather unsure about interrupting.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

An 18-month old Angela Lansbury endorses Pond's Cold Cream.
Newspaper cutting from The London Daily Chronicle, 5 May 1927 - A consultation with Angela Brigid - When I saw Miss Moyna Macgill, little Angela Brigid Lansbury was in attendance. Miss Macgill is, in private life, the very charming wife of Mr Edgar Lansbury, and Brigid, aged 1 1/2, is their daughter. In reply to my inquiry as to whether she used Pond's for that lovely complexion of hers, little Brigid made sympathetic sounds which her mother interpreted as meaning "not yet, but I jolly well intend to later on." And her mother completely approved of that very sensible decision. "One of the best things that I can hope for her," said Miss Macgill, "is that she should keep a fair and clear complexion, free from all blemishes; and when she begins to grow up she will be taught that Pond's Two Creams are the best means to that end."
