- "the driver struck him from behind"

"I have lost count of meetings...where I share these experiences [of inequitable treatment in transportation for people with disabilities]...But when it comes to actually implementing ideas or changing how we approach transportation, nothing actually changes. FOR YEARS."

Perhaps the biggest barrier for people with disabilities in experiencing equitable treatment in transportation around DC is what I call the “uh…hm factor.” I have lost count of meetings with government leaders, elected officials, and advisory councils where I share these experiences, and I hear the right noises in response for indicating sympathy and concern. But when it comes to actually implementing ideas or changing how we approach transportation, nothing actually changes. For years. Actions speak louder than words. The lack of action belies the seriousness of listening, of truly taking into account what people with disabilities have to say about the state of our community and making actionable steps to change.

This morning, I could hear my kids having to go through a lockdown drill at their elementary school as I was leaving. This afternoon there was a school shooting in the nearby community of Evergreen. The threat of gun violence is all too real for Americans.
