Onihcikiskwapowin — Saddle Lake Cree Nation will not accept any movement by your government to separate from Canada, as Alberta has no legal or inherent standing to do so. You are creating a national crisis to serve your own political agenda by working to establish a referendum on separation. Take Back Alberta and your supporters appear to be fueling a confrontation with the Government of Canada. But we remind you — these lands you call Alberta are not yours. They are ours. We are the only sovereigns on our territories. Treaty No. 6 was entered into by our Peoples in 1876 — long before the Province of Alberta was created.
Your recent actions, in the aftermath of a federal election and during a trade dispute with the United States, suggest a dangerous and misguided belief that separation is a viable path forward. Treaty trumps Canadian law, Premier Smith. And if you have any aspirations for further economic prosperity derived from our lands, you must back off.
Our Treaties are paramount. The Province of Alberta has no authority to override the Treaty relationship and obligations. Your pursuit of separation is not only an affront to our inherent and sovereign rights but a direct violation of the legal and historical foundations of this land. Alberta’s attempts to circumvent the Treaty No. 6 agreements are not just offensive to the Constitution — they are an attack on the sacred, nation-to-nation agreements our ancestors signed in good faith.

The treaties are not symbolic — they are binding legal commitments that your government must honour. Any move to nullify or sidestep them is a declaration of open hostility against our Peoples.
Furthermore, your rhetoric and actions are stirring unrest and threatening the stability of both Alberta and Canada. This separatist agenda is not merely a provincial issue — it risks economic turmoil, social division, and national instability. Our treaties are non-negotiable, and any attempt to infringe upon them will be met with unwavering resistance.

We are also aware of changes proposed under the Alberta Election Act, which suggest the Chief Electoral Officer may allow polling stations on reserve. Let us be clear: the 12,000 tribal members of Onihcikiskwapowin — Saddle Lake Cree Nation — have not and will not sell out our rights to support your separatist ambitions.

We stand in solidarity with all tribal governments who have issued statements opposing this effort. If Albertans do not wish to remain on our Treaty lands, then perhaps relocation is in order. And should any provincial territorial organization speak of “cooperation” or “economic reconciliation” without clearly opposing separation, know this — we do not give our consent, and it is our consent that you legally require.
