GUESS WHO'S BACK

#FursuitFriday
The "Raymond" german shepherd fursuit. He is standing 3/4 away from the camera, showing off his back and hip as he wags his tail. He is looking over his right shoulder at he camera. He has dark brown fur on his back, lighter brown fur on his shoulders and hips, and golden fur on his lower arms and legs. His muzzle has similar colors, dark on the tip of the muzzle, lighter on the face, golden around his eyes and cheeks, and off-white dots on his brows. There's a shelf with some curios and books in the background. The same fursuit, standing, looking at the camera, and waving with his right hand. The same fursuit, down on one knee, and with his hands on the bent other knee. He's about 3/4 on to the camera, showing off his left side. He's looking at the camera.

Learned that an anonymous outside expert on submersibles did an interview with the OceanGate Titan investigation, and they released a transcript, with all the names redacted. The first line of his first answer? "I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic."

11 Q. So how did you get yourself started into submersible
12 operations?
13
A.
Well, I'm sure you're familiar with my film Titanic.
When I
14
set down the path to make that film, the first thing that I did
15
was arrange to be introduced to the head of the submersible
16
program at the P.P. Shirshov Institute in Moscow, a guy named

Professor
I. I did that through a mutual friend
18
of ours, a guy named
, who is one of the preeminent
underwater cinematographers in the world. And had been on a
20
submersible expedition out to Titanic the previous year with the
21
Russians. And that was organized by a Canadian company that was
22 doing an IMAX film which was released under the title Titanica.
The typical game must be way more broken than it seems.
Think about how broken bad games superficially are. Now think about how broken a Mario or Zelda speedrun is, after decades of obsessive fans plumbing their depths. This implies most games have huge amounts of jank waiting to be unearthed.

Stringing copper braid around to try to cut down electrical noise pickup? It's like I'm back in the lab!
A Les Paul guitar with the pickups removed, showing that the cavities they sit in have been lined with copper tape. Copper braid connects to the metal grounds of the pickups.
update: I'll be going to NeurIPS
What would you be looking to do if you did?
do I know anyone going to NeurIPS? My boss has offered to send me this year

Yeah. The past few years have been rough, and I'm lucky I managed to stumble into having a little mental space to breathe.
It turns out building habits and stuff actually requires not being in survival mode, who knew?!
(Yeah yeah I did)

we are measuring height wrong
Crude sketch. Text says: "Proposal: Measure height like we measure temperature". It shows a short stick figure on the left, and a tall stick figure on the right. Dotted lines extend from their heads, denoting height below and above, respectively, an arbitrary "0 cm°" height midway between their heights. The short person is -30 cm° and the tall person is +30 cm°. That is, short people have negative heights, and tall people have positive heights.
The hour or so I spend playing guitar and not staring at a screen might be the most beneficial thing I do for my sanity most days.
I bet it'd be good to play with other people.
Ah well, back to the screen because we live in the atomized hell of late capitalism.

teaching an old paperclip new tricks
I finished sorting my USB cables. Very exciting! Except I don't have enough shelf space for the bins as well as my CDs which are already overflowing off screen.

Bonus pic: the worst USB cable I own
Some shelves with plastic bins in them. The plastic bins hold cables, and have labels on them: "USB C misc", "USB A/B", "USB C/C", "USB Power", "USB A/C with D±", "USB A/micro B", "USB A/C NO DATA PINS", and "USB A Extensions". Also above the bins are a bunch of CDs. a USB A to C cable plugged into a tester. The tester has LEDs for USB pins indicating continuity. On this cable, only one VBUS and one GND are lit up, indicating not only can this not transmit data, but it will only work when plugged in one way.
physicist privilege is skipping half of a 3blue1brown video because that segment is all about simple harmonic oscillators
Book finished: A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.

It's a science fiction classic from the 1950s. So the premise (catholic monks preserving knowledge after a nuclear apocalypse) is a fun one, but the ways it has diffused into popular culture are better than the novel itself.

Upside of getting woken up at 5 AM: I've got everything done that I needed to do today and it's only 12:30.
you ever just nail a song when you go to play it on guitar? feels good

the history of the english internet has been an endless struggle between the ambient spirit of 4chan and the ambient spirit of somethingawful at each others throats. they're calling it The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Yuri in Internet History (人類史上最大最悪の絶望的百合)
I thought it was Akitober…

Excited to see what you come up with!

I'd suggest House of Wolves by My Chemical Romance. Or really anything off that album.
