"What children need to learn most is empathy for others, the capacity for nurturance, cooperation, and the maintenance of social ties, which cannot be done without the strength, respect, self-discipline, and self-reliance that comes through being cared for and caring."

it also highlights a big point of the political project across social networks, which is to find ways to make this kind of dehumanizing and hatred less surprising and acceptable as a part of a culture. its why i've always felt weird about the mainstreaming of so much 4chan langauge and meme stuff

The EHRC will not be winning any friends in government by acting like an activist organisation and pushing for the minister to wave through an unworkable trans bathroom ban without detailed consideration of whether it's right or lawful.

The EHRC has written to the Minister for Women and Equalities, demanding that she rushes through their dreadful draft Code of Practice.

This is a bizarre intervention from a supposedly impartial public body.

It's Cambridge bin ladies today - during the First World War women did lots of jobs that were previously men's work, including keeping the place clean and tidy. Here's Cambridge Corporation dust cart crew number 1 and number 6 with their uniforms and equipment.
Cambridge Corporation dust cart number 6, a tall trailer on large cart wheels. Two women are posing in front, one sweeping, one shovelling dirt into the dust cart. Cambridge Corporation dust cart number 1, with four women standing in front. Three are holding brooms and one a shovel.

You’ll notice that new developments in generative AI are always accompanied by new ways of depicting women without their consent—undermining their autonomy and harassing them—almost like it’s a pillar of the technology and its evolution

...happened because you had social landlords easily organising to lobby the Scottish Government to do it. In health, professional networks had a similar role.

I *think* this tiny announcement actually is part of a bigger change of the Scottish Government pushing back on these policy networks...

...of that is that the smaller polity in Scotland meant that key actors in policy-networks could get their voices heard when opposing a particular change, or supporting a particular change. I'd say I see a lot of that in my area - social housing. Policy changes like the ending of the right to buy...

EXC: English councils will still be poorer in 2029 than they were in 2010, according to the IfG.

Report finds councils are increasingly providing social care and little else. Libraries, youth services, parks, all falling by the wayside.

This story reminds me of learning about how the Tyne and Wear Metro was built with bus and train integration at its heart. Years later and we've unlearned it all.

Distance to the bus stop makes a huge difference for many of us. This is poor planning and decision making. Existing bus stops away from station don't even appear to have bus shelters on Google street view.

Final thought: all of this convenience matters and adds up, and it's a major reason people enjoy having their own private vehicle that they can park near to their house.

Number (5) is about weather. I am grateful to live close to a bus stop when it is very hot 🌞, when it is cold and icy ❄️, and when it is wet 🌧️.

(4) Having to walk further to the bus stop takes away from me the choice about how to use my spoons for the day. I have limited spoons and having to spend them all on the quotidian stuff can be very limiting.
agvbergin.net
I don't know the area in Blyth but looking on Google maps I think my number (3) may be relevant: bus stops need to be well-placed to use other pedestrian infrastructure like road crossings.

I will pick a bus stop to get on or off based on it's position relative to a crossing.

(2) Helps a bunch when I have shopping or other heavy or small but bulky items to convey home or elsewhere.

So (1) shorter distances to the bus stop help me when I am tired to still go out and get stuff done. Happy to let the bus take the strain.
agvbergin.net
Leaving the grammar error there as it illustrates my point, I do not function well when I am tired. I am very glad that I live very close to a bus stop, it helps loads.

Short thread of thoughts as to why the distance to the bus stop matter so much to me ... 🚏🚍

Continuing to help my Mum do a clear-out this morning.

Was worried that I'd get very sad about throwing stuff out but actually every time I move a broken object for the last time I'm glad I'll never have to deal with it again.
