His research focused on the development of radiation dosimeters for monitoring patient doses during radiotherapy for cancer treatment, a vital step toward improving patient safety and treatment accuracy.

🎓 Congratulations to Dr. Peter Woulfe!

In October 2025, Peter successfully defended his PhD under the supervision of LDCRC Principal Investigators Dr. Sinead O'Keeffe and Dr. Elfed Lewis.

The LDCRC is delighted to support this important initiative and applauds the group’s commitment to ensuring that patient voices remain at the heart of research and innovation.

The PPI Limerick Cancer Research has recently published its inaugural newsletter, showcasing the group’s activities and the vital role of patients and the public in shaping cancer research.

This report reinforces a powerful message: cancer knows no borders. The report calls for collaborative action to shape the future of research on the Island of Ireland and deliver better outcomes for all those affected by cancer.

🎄 Final Limerick Cancer Research Meeting of the Year 🎄

We’re looking forward to hosting our final Limerick Cancer Research Meeting of the year tomorrow at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) from 2.30pm.

Máire speaks about the importance of resilience in medicine and pathology, reflecting on the moments that shaped her career. We especially loved her follow-up post sharing the childhood book that first sparked her interest in science, a reminder that curiosity can begin in the most unexpected places

We’re delighted to share Episode 2 of the HTS Labs Podcast, featuring an inspiring conversation between Patrick Clarke and Dr. Máire Lavelle, Lead Breast Histopathologist at UHL.

It offers a great look at how researchers work together across teams to support patient-centred research and innovation.

Led by Dr Niamh Peters, Dr Patrick O’Donnell, and LDCRC PI Professor Rose Galvin, this project will help uncover the challenges faced by this often-overlooked group and shape more inclusive, patient-informed care pathways.

🌟 Proud to see this major milestone for cancer equity in the Mid-West.

Limerick Cancer Trials at UHL were the sole Irish recipient of the prestigious Movember funding, which allows research into improving prostate cancer care for older men living in rural communities.

🎉Well done to Three Minute Thesis (3MT) winner EmmaJude Lyons!

The LDCRC is delighted to celebrate EmmaJude’s fantastic achievement in the 3MT competition. Her work on designing personalised breast cancer risk communication tools is an inspiring example of impactful, patient-centred research at UL.

This project, developed by the Rapid Innovation Unit in collaboration with LDCRC Clinical Director Professor Ruth Clifford and the LDCRC team, uses 3D-printed cancer models to help patients better understand their diagnosis and treatment options.

In a recent article with The Conversation, Dr @dr-jamesbrown.bsky.social , member of the LDCRC leadership team, shares how patient voices challenge researchers to think differently and ensure real-world impact through PPI Limerick Cancer Research.

Patients are at the heart of research. They connect healthcare staff and scientists, clinical practice and community understanding, hard data and human meaning. Behind every dataset is a life, a family, a story.
