Even now there are contemporary defenders of appeasement or at least of its greatest error - Munich. Robert Harris’s novel is a lengthy apology for it. But still the betrayal of the last democracy in central Europe, with a good army, natural defences and a will to fight. For fuck all.

Well he was in the city - don’t know if he went to the apartment or not

Hmmmm … he was actually in the room when the Czechs were sold for a piece of paper. I think he got away with it, not that he was any less guilty. I’d accept that the perception was as you say but absolutely not the reality.

Didn’t stop Douglas Hume though and he was knee deep in appeasement. (So I think your point is a good one but just being my usual quibbling self.) Labour were about 25 years from SDP foundation to Andrew Adonis being a minister.

Trying again to get some code I wrote 12 years ago into the Linux kernel mainline. Turns out there have been quite a few kernel API changes since then. Who could have guessed?

The reason there has been a shift to ‘nationalist and unionist’ is that the motivations are not religious (unlike here) and the relentless rise of ‘no religion’ (also not applicable in this case).
There is an argument to be made here but I think, rather uncharacteristically, Mishal Husain misses.

Didn’t know Catherine Connolly was so anti EU and pro Brexit.

All of this aged like milk.

Clare and Mick stuff makes even more sense now

Matthew a good appointment. He's a good guy.

Focus was always on the Home Championship in those days, mind you. All went wrong when the fans charged on to the pitch at Flodden and got stuck in the mud. Big contrast with the reverse fixture at Bannockburn a few years before, then it was the charge on the pitch that sealed the Scots' victory.

Harold got into trouble for that sort of thing too - switching his allegiance to the English side after previously giving William his support at the Under-21 level. Didn't go down well in camp of the man they called "the bastard".

Once again the international break ruined the domestic game

Back in those days there were no substitutes so attempts to replace Godwinsson with another English man failed.

Each to their own but I personally can’t vote for Catherine Connolly as long as her answer on this question stays the same.

Throwing them under the bus would cost so little and put many voters at ease. But she only has good things to say about them, and always refuses to specify any disagreement.

Glad to see this analysis of the SNP currency plans in @scotnational.bsky.social newsletter from last night:

"Upon independence, Scotland is expected to continue losing around 8% to 10% of its GDP [...] this means that the Scottish private sector must shrink by between 5% to 7% each year."

who do you think of when you hear the opening words of Plaistow Patricia?

I really disagree. In a sense you are right because there is nobody else there either but if politics is/should be principally verbal then more debate not less required.

Fundamental problem with the current system is that MPs sitting in the chamber listening to debate is devalued by an electorate that demands MPs are social workers at their beck and call.

Worth just repeating that the 1918 constitution of the Labour Party gives the conference no control over a Labour government and that is a feature, not a bug. To claim there was some golden moment in the past where that wasn't true is to tell lies about the form and spirit of Labour's rules.

RTÉ pronouncing Lidl as ‘leedle’ (rhymes with needle) - is that correctly German or an Irish affectation?
