Is the Patrician in The Colour of Magic definitely Vetinari? Not sure it refers to him by name and although he largely sounds like Vetinari, the physical description definitely isn't that of the later books. Likely that it *is* Vetinari and Pratchett just evolved the character, as he often did.

No, the article refers to level B2 of the framework.

Certainly seems excessive for a lot of jobs or for just living somewhere.

I would guess they're in the same ballpark, but different exams covering different skills. I have A-Level English literature and DALF C1 French - which were not very similar to each other. The DELF B1/B2 French versions felt more like I imagine English as a Foreign Language to be.
4u1e.bsky.social
Should be the same framework in both languages - I didn't find French C1 much different in approach to B2 or B1, just harder.
4u1e.bsky.social
Well, the headline's misleading. The article itself actually refers to level B2.
4u1e.bsky.social
I think they did but the Independent felt that wouldn't be recognised in the headline.

Yes. The French equivalents are pretty academic, requiring essay writing etc skills and familiarity with French culture as well as good exam technique.

France currently requires B1 if applying for nationality, I think, apparently going up to B2 soon.

I've got C1 in French (next level up), which technically makes me employable in France, but not sure how much real fluency I would claim! Don't have an A-Level, so don't know how closely they compare.

The're using A-levels as recognisable shorthand for the European CEFR standard B2 level to which it's probably roughly equivalent:
