actually it reminds me more of finding 1000s of human contaminants annotated as proteins within draft bacterial genomes in GenBank, which we published in 2018 (and @aphillippy.bsky.social knows this work): pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31064768/

Everyone is afraid to speak right now. The freedom to speak your mind, without fear of retribution, is fundamental to our society. It’s even more fundamental to academia, where the phrase “academic freedom” has long represented the ability of professors, students, and others in the academy to speak out on any topic, no matter how controversial.
