Mind-numbing how many layers of history there can be to a single manuscript page: Syriac upper text (10th c.), Armenian undertext (pre-10th c.), Arabic material used for binding (11-12th c.?), Coptic foliation in the margin (date?), modern foliation at the bottom. Opened palimpsest codex (Leiden UL Or. 14236) with Syriac upper text and Armenian undertext. The upper text is written in black and red ink and decorated braided band patterns. There's also a fragment with Arabic on it between the two pages of the opened codex.

We think there’s a unified self that thinks, feels, acts. Philosopher Monima Chadha, inspired by Vasubandhu, argues this is a mistake. The “self” does nothing; we're just chains of causes and effects. Understanding this will make us less anxious and angry, and make us more compassionate and kinder.

Maybe the best example in the episodes I've heard so far is when he says that a marriage to an undercover cop would be just as good as an honest marriage, so long as you never find out your spouse is an undercover cop. 😲

At least he's consistent!
One thing about the series is that Danaher is a behaviorist, a position I have no sympathy with at all. Often when he states features of his view - things he gladly accepts - they strike me as a straight reductio of his overall position. Sven does a nice job pressing him on this throughout.

The concept of wuwei or “non-action”: does it mean that the perfect sage or political ruler simply never does anything?

I wonder if you could really get money for that study?

When I hear my own voice recorded I always think it sounds like him; my theory is that this is why my own voice doesn't bother me when I listen back to the podcast episodes (many people hate the sound of their own voice "from outside").

A study has just been published comparing writings by three pairs of twins to see whether they write differently, including me and my art historian brother Glenn. The upshot is that our styles are apparently very dissimilar.

Miira Tuominen and I edited this new book from Brill with no fewer than 25 chapters on various aspects of ancient and medieval philosophy in Greek, Arabic, and Latin texts. Actually there's a little Persian in there too.

Cartesianism and women: why figures like Poullain de la Barre (whose name I just managed to spell right on the first try!) thought Descartes' ideas would be an ideal basis for arguing in favor of gender equality.
